The 2025 Chinese National Games continue in Shenzhen, China, with the nation’s best swimmers taking to the Shenzhen pool for the prestigious quadrennial event.

Among the multi-medalists thus far is Zhang Zhanshuo, the 18-year-old who has already amassed a trio of medals over the course of the first four days of competition.

Zhang kicked off his campaign with a monster swim in the men’s 400m free, establishing a new World Junior Record of 3:42.82 en route to gold.

Then he tried the 200m free on for size, where he landed atop the podium again, clinching the top spot in a result of 1:44.86, a new lifetime best and a mark within half a second of Sun Yang‘s Chinese national record.

Then today, on day four, Zhang blasted a result of 7:46.69 to win the men’s 800m free, becoming China’s 3rd-quickest performer in history in the process.

After his 200m free victory, Zhang spoke to the Asian media, pointing to one of his Asian competitors as inspiration to improve in his events, specifically the 200m free.

“Seeing Tatsuya Murasa swim 1:44.54 pushes me. I can’t be full of myself – my eyes are on the global stage,” said the teenage phenom.

Zhang Zhanshuo smashes the national junior record, winning 200m freestyle gold at 1:44.86.

Murasa is Japan’s 18-year-old, who shocked many with his bronze medal-garnering performance in the men’s 200m freestyle this summer in Singapore.

Murasa punched a time of 1:44.54, a result which rendered him the Japanese national record holder as well as Asia’s 3rd-swiftest performer in history. Prior to his medal-earning performance, Murasa’s lifetime best rested at the 1:45.67 he notched earlier this year at the World Championship Trials as a 17-year-old.
