Instead No 10 deepened a leadership crisis. Keir Starmer’s officials highlighted the weakness of his position. Like rebellious Labour backbenchers, some Cabinet ministers are now mulling a future without Starmer.

Rewind a day… The Prime Minister’s closest aides had read The i Paper’s reporting with alarm – and realised he really did face serious plotting from Labour MPs.

But No 10’s paranoid briefing against Wes Streeting became the story. It was a mad, toxic response.

The Health Secretary – whom they accused of mutiny – was undoubtedly boosted by his brave, confident performances in front of the TV cameras yesterday. Whether or not he will survive the next general election is up for debate, given he’s defending a wafer-thin majority of 500.

Speaking to ministers and MPs yesterday, their overriding emotions were fury, bafflement and despair. Some of their replies are unfit to publish in a familynewspaper. Most fear annihilation, with Labour and Starmer hitting historic lows in opinion polls.

The UK cannot afford this infighting. The public expects a basic level of competence at No 10, clear policy direction and strong leadership where the dog wags the tail.
