The City of Rochester says the break started in the middle of the night, so crews had to come in from home to shut off the water around 8 a.m. However, archived emergency scanner chatter shows the city got its first call about the flooding several hours before, around 2:30 a.m.
Some homes experienced minor flooding with one to two feet of water in their basements, while others faced water levels nearly reaching the first floor. Four fire trucks were on Meredith Street around noon to pump water from basements.
An RG&E van was also present, and some neighbors reported that the company shut off their gas lines.
“So we’re currently no heat. It sounds like RG&E kind of shut off gas to the whole street. Which, you know, I’m glad — keep people safe. Our furnace is off,” said Izzy Updike, a resident whose basement flooded about 20 inches.
As of noon, the city confirmed that 30 homes were without water due to the break. The city also confirmed that the break came from the eight inch main.
One neighbor expressed concern about insurance coverage for the flood damage, stating that insurance informed her the flooding’s origin had to be inside the home for coverage. Since the break occurred outside, it was considered the city’s responsibility.
News10NBC will continue to reach out to the city and RG&E and update you when both water and gas lines are restored.
