MLB RUMORS — These days, you can’t throw a digital stone without hitting a list of free agent projections. Indeed, we’ve already covered the latest from Baseball America, The Athletic, FanGraphs, and MLB Trade Rumors. So check out any of those posts for more if you want it.
I do have two new lists for you today, as well.
First, at USA Today, Jesse Yomtov, Gabe Lacques, and Bob Nightengale do their best to predict where the top free agents will land this offseason. And to the Cubs, they send Alex Bregman (Lacques) and Ranger Suarez (Nightengale, Yomtov). Both seem like logical fits. And, in fact, Suarez has now been connected to the Cubs by four individual insiders (those two, plus Darragh McDonald and Steve Adams at MLBTR). No other Cubs mentions there, though.
Second, at The New York Post, Jon Heyman takes a slightly different approach, sidestepping most of the team predictions for contract projections. We’ll start there today.
MLB Free Agent Projections
Kyle Tucker, OF
The first player on the list is Kyle Tucker, who, according to Heyman, won’t top $400 million in his overall guarantee OR $35M in average annual value. That’s still a healthy commitment, but it’s a lot closer to the range you’d LIKE to think the Cubs would be willing to go if they really did want to bring in a corner outfielder this winter, as Bob Nightengale reported earlier today.
Of course, even if that is where he ends up (and I suspect it might be more), Chicago will not be the destination.
“If I told you Cubs [signed Kyle Tucker this offseason] would you be stunned?”“Yes.” – @Feinsand pic.twitter.com/U6CQhoazxT
— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 10, 2025Tatsuya Imai, SP
Tatsuya Imai (now officially going to be posted) has been connected to the Cubs a few times already this offseason, and he’s easy to dream on given his age, past success, and remaining upside. However, if Jon Heyman’s projection is accurate, you can kiss him goodbye: 8 years, $200M.
That prediction is fairly close to what we saw from Tim Britton (8 years, $190M), but way more than what we saw projected at MLBTR (six years, $150M) and FanGraphs (4 years, $100M).
Dylan Cease, SP
I really hope the Cubs and Dylan Cease can find a way to reunite this offseason, but some of the early projections have him WAY out ahead of what you might reasonably expect the Cubs to offer. Jon Heyman is probably at the outer, outer edge of what they’d be willing to do: 7 years, $175M. I honestly feel silly even thinking that is going to happen. The Cubs just don’t go to these lengths often, and even less so for pitchers.
More on Cease in a second.
Alex Bregman, 3B
There hasn’t been as much smoke connecting Alex Bregman to the Cubs this winter as I thought there might be, given their limited options to upgrade and their prior interest in signing him. But if he seriously gets 7 years and $172 million, as Jon Heyman predicts, you can, you guessed it! Kiss him goodbye.
Kazuma Okamoto, 3B
But to show you I’m not only bad vibes, I do find the five-year, $100M projection for Okamoto to be very reasonable! If that’s the level, the Cubs may find themselves involved, preferring Okamoto’s lower ceiling/higher floor/cheaper contract profile to country-mate and fellow free agent 3B Munetaka Murakami ($150M over six years).
Others of Interest:
Ranger Suarez: 5/$135M Michael King: 3/$75M Zac Gallen: 3/$60M Shota Imanaga: 2/$38M Brad Keller: 2/$26M Brandon Woodruff: 1/$20.025MDylan Cease to the Astros?
Circling back to Dylan Cease, Jon Morosi had a very attention-grabbing update on MLB Network: “I did some checking the last couple days to confirm that at the deadline in July, the team that was most interested in him (was) the Houston Astros….they have a significant need for starting pitching help….Especially with Framber (Valdez) being a free agent, Dylan Cease to the Astros probably has as much of a chance of happening as any other free agent prediction out there.”
There’s more in here, but that bolded part was the money line:

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 10, 2025Now, the issue is that, historically, the Astros don’t hand out contracts like the one Cease is likely seeking. But there are firsts every winter. Maybe this will be one of them.

Bob Nightengale doesn’t see the Cubs as a likely landing spot for Alex Bregman because of Matt Shaw. He also sees Pete Alonso finally departing New York, as the Mets begin to prioritize defense and run prevention (now that sounds like like the David Stearns we saw in Milwaukee). Indeed, that’s a point expanded upon at The Athletic by Will Sammon, who suggests the Mets could turn internal for a first base solution next season. One more from Bob. Here are the starting pitchers he has on the trade block: Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, Hunter Greene, Sandy Alcantara, Sonny Gray, Freddy Peralta, MacKenzie Gore, Edward Cabrera, and Luis Severino. With the exception of starters from the Reds (Greene), Cardinals (Gray), and Brewers (Peralta), the Cubs should have some legitimate trade alternatives to the free agent starters they’ll be targeting this winter. Lot of talent there. At The Athletic, Patrick Mooney, Ken Rosenthal, Katie Woo, and Will Sammon tried to determine the market for Kyle Tucker. And, unsurprisingly, the Los Angeles Dodgers are at the very top of the heap, alone in Tier 1. They’re followed by the Yankees, alone in Tier 2, and the “usual suspects” in Tier 3: Red Sox, Mets, Giants, Blue Jays. Then, there is a Tier 4, which is just the Phillies (currently focused on Kyle Schwarber). And THEN, in Tier 5, you can find the Chicago Cubs, who are all but counted out completely. Still no surprises, just continued confirmation. Other teams mentioned as even the tiniest possibility: Phillies, Astros, Orioles, Tigers, Mariners, Rays (his hometown). Max Scherzer wants to keep pitching. God bless. Other stuff:Per @WillSammon, Kodai Senga is being considered a "buy-low" trade target among teams.Senga also no longer has a full no-trade clause in his contract and he can only block moves to 10 teams.Sammon also reports it's unclear if the Mets are legitimately open to moving him. pic.twitter.com/mERg4DMFhq
— SNY Mets (@SNY_Mets) November 10, 2025Per @martinonyc, the Mets will be in on Tatsuya Imai, who will be posted by the Seibu Lions later this offseason.More from Andy here, including why he believes the Mets won't pursue him similarly to how they pursued Yoshinobu Yamamoto: t.co/4hvTJ3u99i pic.twitter.com/wd4F3E582R
— SNY Mets (@SNY_Mets) November 10, 2025 Lastly, re-sharing my work from earlier: One MLB insider (with the help of some rival GMs) believes the Cubs will be the biggest sleeper of the offseason, targeting one or more top starting pitchers like Framber Valdez and Dylan Cease, as well as … a corner outfielder? As you might expect, I am not buying it. But still thought you should see it.MLB Insider: Cubs Are Offseason’s “Biggest Sleeper” with Some Surprising Targets on Tap t.co/rKoapt9LuI
