Powell, who was born and raised in Texas, started his acting career in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003. Before his first year of college, Powell landed a role in The Great Debaters, directed by and starring Denzel Washington. Washington then introduced him to agent Ed Limato, who encouraged Powell to move to Los Angeles, where he played multiple small roles in movies and TV shows such as Into the West, Jack & Bobby, CSI: Miami, NCIS, Without a Trace, Rizzoli & Isles, The Lying Game, The Dark Knight Rises and Stuck in Love.
After his role in the first two seasons of the TV show Scream Queens and the Netflix rom-com film Set It Up in 2018, he started getting more calls from contacts in the film industry. His breakthrough role occurred in 2022, when he was cast as Jake "Hangman" Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Miles Teller and Tom Cruise. Since then, he has starred in many blockbuster films, including Anyone But You, Hit Man and Twisters. Now, the actor is promoting his Hulu TV show, Chad Powers, and his latest movie, The Running Man, which is a remake of the original 1987 film with the same title.

But in a recent interview with Variety that was posted to TikTok on Saturday, the 37-year-old actor gave his fans and his The Running Man co-stars Josh Brolin and Lee Pace an update on his college career.
Then, the actor said that he is set to receive his bachelor's degree by the spring of 2027, revealing that he is "finishing properly" and not getting an honorary degree (an academic award given by a university to recognize an individual's significant contributions to society, without requiring them to complete formal coursework or examinations). Pace then interrupts his co-star and asks him how he has the time to complete a degree, to which Powell responded that he is only taking six credits a semester.
