Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Namewee has been detained by local police officers after influencer Iris Hsieh’s death was reclassified as a homicide.

Namewee, 42, surrendered to police on Wednesday, November 5, according to Sky News. The outlet reported that Namewee (real name Wee Meng Chee) will “be placed under remand for six days,” according to his attorney.

“I hope that the investigation will be carried out thoroughly and with the utmost objectivity and fairness,” lawyer Joshua Tay said in his statement.

Hsieh, 31, was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur on October 22. As police officers investigated her death, they claimed that Hsieh was last seen with Namewee, who was subsequently detained. He was charged with drug possession and use but vehemently denied the accusations in a social media statement.

In a series of Instagram posts before his recent detainment, Namewee vowed to cooperate with the police investigation.

“I have now arrived at the police station and will cooperate fully with the investigation to provide an explanation to the public and the deceased family,” Namewee said in a translated statement earlier this week. “I will not run away.”

Namewee further noted that he was “deeply sorry” about Hsieh’s death without detailing his involvement or if they knew one another.

Hsieh was a Taiwanese OnlyFans model and influencer with 548,000 followers on Instagram.

“Some people say my account keeps disappearing and changing … But what I want to say is: I’m still here, and that’s enough,” Hsieh wrote in Chinese via Instagram in May. “From disappearing with 920,000 followers, to starting over, and then disappearing again, several times. So, I don’t think every follower is a miracle, but proof that I never give up!”

She continued, “You think I’m managing an account, but actually I’m managing a breath of fresh air. Thank you to everyone who can still find me, thank you for not treating me as a passerby, but remembering me and staying. This world moves fast, but I don’t want to pretend! I’m just taking it slow, slowly building things up, slowly holding on, and I’m still here.”

According to Hsieh, she was authentically herself via social media presence.

“I can guarantee one thing: every word, every picture, every outburst here is me,” she said. “350,000 followers isn’t just a number, it’s proof that you still believe I’m interesting. If you’ve seen me at my lowest point and are still willing to stay, then this account isn’t just an account, it’s the unspoken companionship between us.”

Several of Hsieh’s followers expressed their condolences in the comments section.

“Baby, you’ve worked so hard being a carefree and happy little angel ?‍♀️ Rest in peace,” one Instagram user wrote, with another adding, “An angel who will live forever in my heart.”

A third individual replied, “Hsieh Yu-hsin, may you rest in peace. You’ll always live in my heart as an angel.”

Another, meanwhile, noted, “Walk well along the way, live in my heart, forever angel.”

Namewee was previously arrested in Malaysia in 2016 after his “Oh My God” music video allegedly insulted individuals who practiced Islam. He was released from police custody after posting bail.
