ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The first day of early voting for the November general election ended on Saturday at the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported seeing hundreds of people lining up to cast their ballots early, with many saying the site carries extra significance because it is where Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting as a woman in the 1872 election. Some voters dressed as suffragettes to pay tribute to Anthony; others dressed up as handmaids from The Handmaid’s Tale.

“It’s amazing. Symbolic. She’s so instrumental for women and just rights for everyone. And so I wanted to come to this one specific place to vote,” said Sriivas Jonnala.

Another voter shared the importance of the experience for their family. “We have a two year old daughter. And so we thought about the significance of the Susan B. Anthony house and coming here and having her vote with us for the first time, where she’s really understands what’s going on. So, the meaning really meaningful for us,” said Anthony Plonczynski-Figueroa.

Some people said it is much easier to come out during the weekend than on Election Day. A first-time voter from Germany said she was excited to make her voice heard.

Voters said it is important to honor those who fought to protect and earn the right to vote, like Susan B. Anthony. Saturday was also the last day to register to vote, and early voting will continue through Sunday, Nov. 1. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Nov. 2 is the last day to request an absentee ballot.
