JAMAICA — Jamaica is still recovering after Hurricane Melissa left a trail of devastation across the island, leaving dozens dead and causing billions of dollars in damage.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Rayon Wong, a former Rochester man now living in Jamaica, about the recovery efforts. Wong says his roof was torn off and all the trees in his yard were taken down. He shared footage showing homes left in ruins.
“If you look at the total devastation, especially in the Whitehorse area in the west, it looks like a total warzone,” Wong said. “It looks like a tornado, when you see a tornado come through and it totally demolishes everything, everybody’s home is totally demolished.”
Despite the damage to his own property, Wong spent Saturday – his birthday – giving aid to people he says need it more.
“This was one of the best birthday presents I could’ve ever got was to see, like I said, the smiles on peoples faces,” Wong said. “Like Lashaun said for a bottle of water, oh my God… they said water is life.”
Wong is working with a team of Jamaican businesses to provide help to his community. He says it’s tough to care about his own losses when he sees the devastation around him.
“Don’t be selfish, you know, I mean, when I see little children that, like I said this is going to have a long lasting mental state especially on the children,” Wong said. “We’re back to catching water, bathing out of a tub, lighting a candle cause we have no lights at night.”
Wong says he’s confident Jamaica will build back stronger but they need all the help they can get and he’s calling on the Rochester community.
From Nov. 14 through the 16th the Rochester Jamaican Organization will be hosting a hurricane relief benefit at Tropix Eatery and Lounge on Lake Avenue in Charlotte. All proceeds will go towards relief efforts in Jamaica.
