Defense Ministry to reintegrate defected NCOs into the new Syrian army ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Ministry of Defense is preparing to open the door in the coming days for the return of noncommissioned officers who defected from the former Syrian regime’s army, with expectations that thousands will join.

A Defense Ministry source told Enab Baladi that the ministry is in the process of bringing noncommissioned officers and volunteers who had defected from the former army into the ranks of the new Syrian army.

Although the ministry has not announced a specific start date to accept NCO candidates, the source, who asked not to be named, said the announcement will be made in the coming days once procedures are finalized.

The source, who is familiar with the process, expects around 4,000 service members to apply to join, while noting the final number will become clear once registration opens soon.

The ministry source attributed the decision to the role played by NCOs in defecting from what he called “the treacherous army” and in participating in the Syrian revolution.

He added that the start of receiving return applications from defected volunteer NCOs came after the ministry completed necessary procedures and as it nears the conclusion of the file related to defected officers.

The ministry’s media office previously told Enab Baladi that specialized committees were formed to receive applications from defected officers and to organize their records by rank, specialty, and specific criteria, in addition to summoning defectors and those discharged for security or political reasons.

According to the ministry, reintegrating defected officers is a priority given their accumulated military and technical expertise. The Defense Ministry has begun appointing some of them to leadership posts under a comprehensive plan to benefit from their competencies in building the new Syrian army, with ongoing reviews to make additional appointments as needed for the coming phase.

The ministry said more than 2,000 defected officers are now serving in the Syrian army out of 3,500 who have been interviewed.

Six senior officers

A promotional clip released by the Syrian Ministry of Defense on Tuesday, November 4, showed that the new Syrian army has incorporated six defected officers from the former regime into its structure:

Lt. Gen. Salim Idris, adviser to the minister for the National Academy of Military Engineering

Brig. Gen. pilot Hassan Hamadeh, deputy chief of staff of the Air Force for Air Defense

Brig. Gen. Ahmed Berri, deputy head of the Training Authority for combat training

Brig. Gen. Abdulmajid Dabis, deputy head of the Training Authority for educational institutions

Brig. Gen. Abdulkarim al-Daher, deputy head of the Training Authority for administrative affairs

Brig. Gen. Zaher Al Saket, adviser to the Operations Authority

Bringing back defectors

Several ministries have moved to staff their institutions with defectors from the former regime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for example, approved the reinstatement of 21 defected diplomats on November 3.

For his part, Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab announced on October 31 that the committee formed after the expanded meeting with defected officers in September had concluded its work, having interviewed officers in preparation for returning them to service within the ministry.

According to the minister, the Interior Ministry interviewed more than 260 legal officers currently inside Syria who are ready to resume work.
