Although human composting is legal in Oregon, where Novak lives on a ranch, her remains will be taken to an Earth Funeral facility in Washington state for the process, known as natural organic reduction. She joked that she’ll have to be packed in ice to make the trip.
Once the process is complete, small portions of the soil will go to friends and family, along with instructions to plant a tree or shrub, preferably a tree. Novak said she once considered a place in Oregon where a single tree could be planted over her, but she wanted more than that. As she put it, she’d like to be many trees.
Novak said she hopes her choice inspires others to think about the environment, and to see what comes after death as something beautiful to look forward to rather than to dread. She wants to be remembered not just for her films, but for everything her life and art turned her into.
