If the Chicago Bulls want to avoid their first losing streak of the season, they will have to stop one of the most dynamic young backcourts in the NBA.
The Philadelphia 76ers got off to an equally hot start to begin the season and come into tonight’s meeting at the United Center an identical 5-1. Now, it’s fair to argue that their competition has not been nearly as stiff as what the Chicago Bulls have seen over the first couple of weeks. Whereas the Bulls battled multiple teams projected to compete for a postseason spot this season, the 76ers got to face recent conference bottom feeders like the Wizards, Hornets, and Nets. And, heck, they even went into OT against the Wizards and barely edged out a Hornets team that lost Brandon Miller early in the game. Nevertheless, Philly has shown signs of returning to their place among the conference’s top teams. They currently hold a Top 5 net rating in the NBA and have specifically looked like a major problem on the offensive end. The reason for that isn’t their former MVP, by the way. Joel Embiid is only averaging 22.0 minutes a night to begin the season and scoring 17.3 points on a modest 46.0 percent shooting. Instead, Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe have come out looking like one of the best guard duos in the league. The two have averaged a combined 54.0 points, 14.0 assists, and 10 rebounds per game over Philly’s first six contests. They have also each started the year shooting upwards of 42.0 percent from long range on high volume. Maxey’s sheer speed mixed with Edgecombe’s raw explosiveness has truly been a terrifying combo for opposing defenses. I would be lying if I said I was not very worried about what these two could do to the Bulls’ defense tonight. Not only are we fresh off watching the Knicks’ drain 38 threes against Chicago in two games, but the Bulls are still allowing the fifth-most points in the paint per game. Both Maxey and Edgecombe are more than capable of blowing by this Bulls’ defense and making them pay at the rim. This is why the return of Ayo Dosunmu feels pretty darn important for tonight. One of the team’s best perimeter defenders, Billy Donovan, would likely love to have the option to throw him and Okoro on the 76ers’ guards. It also feels worth pointing out that the free throw could become key tonight. The 76ers have averaged the 7th-most attempts per game (29.5). Maxey is getting to the line 9.5 times per game, while Quentin Grimes and Embiid are averaging at least 5.0 attempts per game. Defending without fouling is extremely difficult against this group. Let’s see if the Bulls can do. Now, the good news for the Bulls is that they should be able to keep up offensively. As amazing as this team has been scoring the basketball, defense hasn’t been its bread and butter thus far. Washington’s second-worst offense dropped 134 points on them last week, while a bottom-10 Orlando offense scored 124. The Bulls have had zero trouble putting points on the board to begin this season, thanks to their well-rounded attack and sky-high assist percentage. This is also one of the few groups that can match Philly’s efficiency in the open floor. Both the Bulls and 76ers rank Top 9 in transition points per 100 possessions. The Bulls have also seen their three-point percentage only trend up over the past few games. While they’re not shooting nearly the same number of attempts as last season, they are creating great shots with their consistent ball movement. The team is now shooting 40.7 percent as a whole, which is the third-highest mark in the league. Now, do I expect that to drop slightly? Absolutely. Vucevic is shooting a ridiculous 53.8 percent, and Dosunmu is nailing his threes at a 47.6 percent clip. Patrick Williams is even shooting a tad better than expected at 44.0 percent. Still, I like a lot of the shots this team is creating and expect them to continue to rank relatively high in terms of overall percentage. Mandatory Credit: Russell Lansford-Imagn Images Even with Joel Embiid playing a smaller role to begin this season, the Bulls can’t forget about him. He has owned this franchise for years and has feasted against the Nikola Vucevic-led frontcourt many times before. I would not at all be shocked if tonight ended up being his best game of the season so far, even with how well Vucevic and Jalen Smith have played to begin the year. After a strong week that included a 32-point outburst against the New York Knicks, Josh Giddey earned a nomination for Eastern Conference player of the week! To be honest, I wouldn’t necessarily be shocked if an award is in his near future. The guard has been off to a fantastic start and has been genuinely impacting winning at a high level. This offense is among the NBA’s best primarily because of him.Other nominees …West: Deni Avdija and Jrue Holiday (POR), Devin Booker (PHX), Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves (LAL), and Alperen Sengun (HOU).East: Jaylen Brown (BOS), Cade Cunningham (DET), Josh Giddey (CHI), Jalen Johnson (ATL) and Ryan Rollins (MIL). t.co/XZhhHJA5oB
