I’ve written and re-written this post in my head more times than I’d care to admit. But all is well that ends well with a Chicago Bears victory in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was absurd, ridiculous, and unthinkable. There were unfathomable plays, irredeemable mistakes, and events that occurred that words cannot accurately describe. But I’ll do my best to put words together in a way that they make sense as I go about recapping this game.
FINAL: Chicago Bears 47, Cincinnati Bengals 42 (ESPN BOX SCORE)
Thoughts on the crazy Week 9 win
Nov 2, 2025; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai (25) runs the ball and guard Joe Thuney (62) blocks against Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai (58) during the first quarter at Paycor Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images Colston Loveland, your table is ready. The first-round rookie caught 6 passes for 118 yards, and scored a pair of touchdowns. I have been worried about the University of Michigan product’s lack of production coming into this game. Sure, signs were pointing in a positive direction because he was seeing an increase in playing time. But the production just hadn’t been there to this point. And then Week 9 happened. That was the kind of performance that should help folks understand why Chicago’s front office made him the first tight end taken in the 2025 NFL Draft.CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 9 INSTANT GRADES
On the one hand, this game was Exhibit A as to why Ben Johnson was hired in the first place. The Bears scored 47 points, racked up 576 yards of total offense, won the time of possession battle (34:30 beats 25:30), and emerged triumphant in the turnover war (3-0). Quarterback Caleb Williams went off with 4 total TDs (3 passing, 1 receiving), rookie running back Kyle Monangai (26 carries, 176 yards) went H.A.M. in his first-ever start, and first-round pick Colston Loveland had me thinking about what the football equivalent of Wally Pipp would be. That was a tremendous road win for a team that could’ve found so many different ways to lose this game. But on the other hand, this game was a snap shot that helps explain why the Bears have fired three head coaches since this site began in 2017. That team tried its best at finding all of the different ways to lose that game. Penalties were still a problem. The special teams played so poorly that I asked the group chat about special teams coaches Ben Johnson might know just in case he needed to make a change after the game. I spent time during halftime looking up free-agent kickers. Again. The defense allowed Joe Flacco to throw for 470 yards and 4 touchdowns, which had me wondering if the team was better off using offensive players on defense because I was out of ideas on how to stop an ancient quarterback who spent the week on the injury report as questionable with a bum throwing shoulder.WATCH: COLSTON LOVELAND’S IMPOSSIBLE GAME-WINNING TOUCHDOWN
I’m not going to sit here and call for heads to roll after a win. However, that is the type of game that results in people losing their jobs. Some difficult conversations need to take place at Halas Hall in the coming days. Don’t get it twisted. I hope the Bears enjoy the dub. It was certainly hard-earned. But some self-reflection is needed all over the place. If the Bears have to play this brand of football for the rest of the year, so be it. That was fun, entertaining, and enlivening. Just when you were expecting the worst, Chicago’s football team came with its best. Yeah, it’s the Bengals. But this is what it is supposed to look like when you step into the modern era of football. At least, when it comes to the offensive side of the football. And if we have to deal with the defense taking a back seat, then I think I can learn to live with it.Week 9 highlights

Caleb Williams — Here is the line for QB1 now that the dust has settled on this game:
DO WE NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT CALEB WILLIAMS TODAY!?20-34, 280, 3 TD, 0 INT, 114.85 Rush, 53 Yards (10.6)2 Catches, 22 Yards, 1 TD pic.twitter.com/ZkGmlRaNgT
— Patrick K. Flowers (@PatrickKFlowers) November 2, 2025That was the kind of game you’d expect Caleb Williams to have against a defense that entered the game playing as poorly as the Bengals were when they walked on the field in Week 9.
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson — Welcome to the party, pal! The newest member of the Chicago’s collected 6 tackles (5 solo), 1 sack, 1 tackle-for-loss, and 1 quarterback hit. It is remarkable that any of the defenders on Dennis Allen’s unit were able to contribute in multiple stat columns based on how many chunk plays were coughed up on Sunday.
Red Zone Offense — They scored on 4 of 6 red zone trips, which was a refreshing. It is hard to beat that first TD. Which was your favorite score?
WHAT’S NEXT: vs. New York Giants at noon CT on Nov. 9 at Soldier Field (FOX-TV)
With win No. 5 in the books, Ben Johnson has more wins through eight games than Matt Eberflus had in 12 games before his firing after last year’s Thanksgiving fiasco. It feels important to underscore that factoid because it captures how big of a difference coaching can make. The biggest difference between last year’s 4-3 team and this year’s group is the guy in charge. Full stop.
Getting back in the win column feels wonderful. Sure, maybe it took a few years off of our lives. I fully expect to have a few more white hairs in my beard whenever I get around to giving it a trim. And, frankly, I’m still not fully sure how to feel or even how to best relay those thoughts and feelings into words on a page. But a win is a win, and you have to take them when you get them and you shouldn’t complain about them when they come your way.
