Sam Metzgar from Dupont, Washington has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Air Force beginning in fall 2026.
“I am very excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment and to continue my academic and athletic journey at the United States Air Force Academy! I want to thank my parents for being with me on every step of this journey through all the early mornings and late nights. I would not have gotten this far without their motivation, encouragement, and support. I would also like to thank Coach Clayton and Coach Finch for being great coaches to work with through this process. Their motivation and dedication to their athletes and the sport of swimming make me look forward to swimming fast for them during my 4 years at the Academy! This opportunity to serve my country while also competing at the highest level of collegiate swimming is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled to join a program that values excellence, leadership, and discipline, both in and out of the pool. I can’t wait to represent the Academy and contribute to something greater than myself. Go Falcons!”Metzgar swims for King Aquatic Club and finished his long course season at Futures in Sacramento. There he swam to personal best times in numerous events, including the 400 free posting a 4:04.48 for 11th, a 8:28.95 in the 800 free for 12th, and a 16:22.26 for 11th. He also swam a best time 1:54.78 in prelims of the 200 free for 14th before finishing 16th in finals.
Back in March, he finished his short course season at Sectionals in Boise and was highlighted by a lifetime best 4:34.62 in the 500 free for 6th. His highest finish was 4th in the 1000 free as he swam a 9:32.91.
Metzgar’s Best SCY Times Are:
200 free: 1:40.89 500 free: 4:34.62 1000 free: 9:19.35 1650 free: 16:02.61The Air Force men finished 3rd out of six teams at the 2025 Western Athletic Conference Championships. Camden Swigart won the only conference title swimming to a 3:46.01 in the 400 IM.
Based on his best times, Metzgar is on the border of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ final of the 200 free and would have been 18th in the 1650 free this past season. Joe Christ was the team’s only ‘A’ finalist in the 200 free as he swam a 1:37.11 for 5th.
Metzgar will arrive next fall as a member of the class of 2030 along with Tyler Stargardt, Barrett Kerrigan, Connor Dunker, Stanley Oka, and John McGaughan.
