Judge Clayton Brennan announces his retirement ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

After more than nineteen years on the bench, Judge Clayton Brennan has announced his retirement from the Mendocino County Superior Court bench. His retirement date is October 31, 2025.

Judge Brennan was elected to the bench in 2006 and initially presided in the Willits branch courthouse.  He transferred to the Ten Mile courthouse in Fort Bragg in 2011, replacing retiring Judge Jonathan Lehan, when the Willits branch was permanently closed. Judge Brennan has spent his entire judicial  career in Mendocino branch courthouses, presiding over all case types from serious criminal cases to  complex civil cases, family law and probate. Prior to joining the bench, Brennan was in private practice  for many years, handling civil and criminal cases and specializing in employment, discrimination, personal injury, wrongful death and complex civil matters. He also served as a deputy district attorney early in his  career. Judge Brennan earned a Juris Doctorate degree from University of California, San Diego in 1990.

Judge Brennan is known as even-tempered and mindful of the financial and other social challenges that  face many defendants and litigants in the Mendocino community. He has been an advocate for ensuring  that court fines and fees are fair and affordable. He has presided over Behavioral Health Court for many  years, working closely with defendants with underlying mental health issues that often contribute to  their law violations. He is deeply rooted in the Mendocino coastal community. Reflecting on his time  in public service, Judge Brennan said, “I’ve enjoyed my career and feel very privileged to have worked  with so many talented and dedicated people. We have a difficult and stressful job, but it’s also  interesting and rewarding.”

Presiding Judge Keith Faulder acknowledged Judge Brennan’s contributions to the public and said,  “Judge Brennan’s judicial temperament, sense of humor and ability to preside over any case type will be  missed. We all wish him well.”
