Weld Food Bank issues urgent call for volunteers, donations ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

The Weld Food Bank is seeking help to support the nearly 40,000 county residents who could face food insecurity due to federal officials pausing funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Though two federal judges ruled Friday that officials must continue to fund SNAP using contingency funds during the government shutdown, it wasn’t immediately clear how quickly beneficiaries could receive the funds that were set to be paused beginning Saturday. That process often takes one to two weeks, and the rulings are likely to face appeals.

To help meet the community’s needs, the Weld Food Bank has added food distribution hours, scheduled additional mobile food pantry stops and purchased nearly $250,000 of additional food that’s expected to provide a week to a week and a half of food support. But to get that food into people’s hands, the food bank will need volunteer help to sort the food, pack carts and distribute the food to those in need.

“Our community is on the cusp of a crisis unlike anything we’ve ever experienced,” the food bank said in a recent email to supporters.

The food bank’s adjusted services and hours will begin Monday and are subject to change. Staff will monitor the programs daily to determine whether more adjustments are needed.

The food bank has a new two-hour lunch distribution shift from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the warehouse at 1108 H St. in Greeley. Distribution volunteers are mainly tasked with packing carts with food and taking them out to people’s cars in the parking lot.

There are also morning distribution shifts from 7:50 a.m. to noon on weekdays and afternoon distribution shifts from 12:45-4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Other volunteer opportunities at the food bank can be found at weldfoodbank.org/volunteer.

The food bank has also scheduled seven additional mobile food pantry distributions at three sites, adding a temporary location. Volunteers will help unload the truck, distribute food and assist some people with taking food to their vehicles. The sites include Riverside Park, 4000 Riverside Parkway, in Evans, Journey Christian Church, 4754 W. 31st St., in Greeley, and Lighthouse Mission at 4800 Hill-N-Park Drive. The food bank is also seeking financial donations, with expectations of needing to make even more additional purchases outside of the food bank’s regular purchasing budget. Those purchases are an extra financial strain as the food bank faces a $700,000 budget shortfall due to heightened needs before the SNAP issues. The food bank launched an end-of-year Bridge the Gap campaign to address the shortfall.

With various food purchasing partners, each dollar donated equals $6 of groceries for those getting help at the food bank.

To support those outside of the Greeley and Evans area, the food bank is also working to provide additional food to food pantries in Dacono, Fort Lupton, Milliken,

“Whatever way you choose to step along side us and your neighbors, know that you are making a difference,” the food bank’s email concluded. “Not just in our work, but in the lives of so many in Weld County who need our help at a difficult time in their lives.”
