There’s no sugarcoating this one.
After a second successful appearance in Arizona facing batters for a couple innings, things with Ben Brown were looking up. Craig Counsell said there would be a check in with the big league team today, and then Brown would head out on a rehab assignment. Assuming he still felt OK in his neck, that is.
Unfortunately, he did not:
#Cubs Ben Brown is experiencing symptoms again after his outing yesterday. He will fly with the team back to Chicago and consult with doctors to determine what’s next.
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) August 26, 2026Long-term, the Cubs and Ben Brown and the doctors/trainers will have to figure out if there’s anything that can be done mechanically to avoid the continued stress reaction/impact in his neck. You hope there doesn’t have to be some fundamental change that makes him ineffective, and you also hope he could resume starting down the road. But I don’t think we know enough to say on either count.
As far as this year goes, the news is really bad. While we and the Cubs weren’t counting on Brown returning this year to make an impact, it was certainly a very realistic hope. And one that looked more and more realistic by the week, until this moment right now.
Now, is it realistic for another shut-down period, and then a ramp-up, and then a return, even in relief? I just don’t see how that’s possible. I am expecting the news from here to be all about hopes for 2027.
