The University of Virginia men’s team brought in the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class this fall, and it’s starting to bear fruit.

During last weekend’s dual meet against ACC rival North Carolina, the Cavalier men pulled out a one-point victory, and helping lead the charge for the team were their star freshman duo, Maximus Williamson and Thomas Heilman.

Both swimmers won both of their individual events to score the maximum 18 points, with Williamson particularly standing out with his swim in the 200 freestyle.

The 19-year-old produced a time of 1:32.32, the fifth-fastest of his career and quickest as a Cavalier, to rank 2nd in the event so far in the 2025-26 season.

2025-26 NCAA Rankings, Men’s 200 Freestyle (SCY)

Tomas Koski (Georgia), 1:32.19 – Georgia v. George Washington Maximus Williamson (Virginia), 1:32.32 – UVA v. UNC Camden Taylor (Texas), 1:32.40 – Texas v. Tennessee Rex Maurer (Texas), 1:32.53 – Texas v. Tennessee Remi Fabiani (ASU), 1:32.56 – Stanford v. Arizona State, Cal

In the race itself, Williamson went out fast, turning in 44.11 at the 100, and managed to hold off teammate David King, who closed like a freight train with a 23.64 final split (to Williamson’s 24.29), down the stretch. King ultimately was the runner-up in 1:32.87.

The Southlake, Texas native’s personal best time in the 200 free stands at 1:30.46, set this past February, which is the current boys’ 17-18 NAG record and also the National High School Record. Additionally, it makes him the swimmer with the fastest personal best in the NCAA this season.

Williamson also won the 500 free (4:19.69) with his fastest swim in more than two years, ranking him 15th in the NCAA this season, and he also played key roles on UVA’s winning 200 and 400 free relays, including leading off the latter in 42.09 to rank 7th in the nation this season in the 100 free.

Heilman, for his part, won the 100 fly (44.59) and 200 fly (1:41.79) and also factored into two winning relays for the Cavaliers. He now ranks 1st this season in the 200 fly and sits 2nd in the 100 fly.
