The Duchess of York is now plain old Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of plain old Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. Her title was one of her last calling cards – along with her hellaciously (to adapt the word she favoured to grovel to Jeffrey Epstein) huge house, Royal Lodge.
Now she is out and expected to pay for her own housing. Not a moment too soon.
At every step in her life, ever since her 1986 wedding to the then-Prince Andrew, then a Falklands hero, Ferguson has been as grasping as her husband. If the rumour is true that she tried to bag Adelaide Cottage, Windsor – the home of the Prince and Princess of Wales – while Mountbatten Windsor tried to grab Frogmore Cottage, also in Windsor, that is just typical.

If that ever was an option – and it was denied by “insiders” – it was shut down pronto by the King. Mountbatten Windsor will move on to a comfortable house on the Sandringham estate. And Ferguson? Who knows?
The thing about all those royal houses – from cottages to palaces – is that they bask in a royal cocoon. They are surrounded by royal estates and have a pool of servants nearby at the beck and call of the Royal Family.
Even Mountbatten Windsor, in his utter humiliation, will be kept at arm’s length from the world. He can roam the 20,000-acre Sandringham estate, unbothered by the paparazzi. He will presumably still be allowed to hold the sort of “straightforward shooting weekend” he described to Emily Maitlis in his catastrophic Newsnight interview, where guests included his disgraced friends Ghislaine Maxwell and Epstein. He might even get a Christmas invitation up at the big house.
Even before his downfall, Mountbatten Windsor’s life was said to be strangely hermit-like, with long stretches of time watching trashy films on a mega-TV. The absence of his titles – and the old deference – will be agony to him. The absence of friends? Not so much.
But Ferguson is a needy figure, crying out for friendship and companionship. When I met her in New York 20 years ago, she was immensely friendly, even though I was a jackal of the press.
But then she would be because she was at a press launch in a Manhattan deli, flogging GourMayo, a light mayonnaise, as used in a sandwich called “the Duchess of York”: grilled chicken breast with melted Muenster cheese and wasabi horseradish mayonnaise.
But no one’s going to buy a sandwich that’s just called “the Fergie”. After a lifetime flogging wares – sandwiches, diet plans, children’s books – her brand is finished.
Ferguson has no trade to fall back on. She can hardly return to her old jobs as a chalet girl, a cleaner, a waitress, at an art gallery and a publisher. My bet is she will end up in the jungle on I’m a Celebrity.
Yes, she could do the decent thing like the late John Profumo. After the disgrace of the 1963 Profumo Affair, the politician spent the rest of his life working for Toynbee Hall, the East End charity. He was even awarded the CBE in 1975 for his fundraising work.
But Ferguson is unlikely to follow Profumo’s lead in cleaning toilets.
All she has to sell now is one thing. Prepare for Ferguson’s tell-all memoir – telling everything except anything critical about her ex-husband. Prepare for her popping up on morning TV sofas. And prepare a camp bed for her in the jungle very soon.
