The University of Northern Colorado volleyball team picked a good time for its first sweep of the season.
The Bears defeated Big Sky Conference opponent Montana State 3-0 Thursday evening at Bank of Colorado Arena, maintaining a hold on second place in the conference with one match to play this week.
UNC beat the Bobcats 25-21, 25-23 and 26-24 to avenge an early-October loss in Bozeman.
“It’s fun,” UNC coach Lyndsey Oates said of the first sweep. “But we don’t worry about it. It’s not something we’ve talked about because you don’t want to put the pressure on that. You just have to find a way, and if it takes three sets, four sets, five sets, reverse sweep. We’ve had more reverse sweeps (winning the final three sets after trailing 2-0) than sweeps, which is really ironic. We’ll take them however we can get them.”

UNC (10-13 overall, 7-3 Big Sky) hosts Montana (14-7, 6-4) at 6 p.m. Saturday to end its three-match home stand. The Bears started the week Tuesday evening with a five-set, nonconference loss to the University of Colorado. Before facing the Bobcats (11-10, 6-4), UNC had been swept five times in their previous 22 matches. Two of those three-set losses were to Big Sky opponents Weber State to start the conference season and last week at Northern Arizona.
Oates said the Bears played good defense against the Bobcats with outside hitter Brynn Reines getting a couple of blocks early in the match on Montana State’s right-side attack. UNC’s service pressure challenged Montana State to set up plays, and the Bears did well defending the pins, Oates said, referring to the antennae at the sides of the net.
“That hurt us at their place when we lost to in Bozeman,” the coach said of the defense at the pins. “We didn’t slow down the middles (the middle blockers) all night. We needed to be better at that.”

She had one error on 21 total attacks for a match-high .571 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Joelie Spelts added nine kills with no errors on 16 total attacks (.563 hitting percentage).
Oates said UNC’s scoring on the pins was the difference for the Bears, rather than the points coming from their middles who match up well against Montana State. The coach said the teams are mirror images at this position.
Outside hitter Alayna Tessena led UNC with 11 kills. Reines and outside hitter Bella Van Lannen both had eight kills. Middle blockers Isabel Bennett and Zoe Gibbs had five and four kills, respectively.“We have to have five hitters able to score and our balance was pretty good tonight,” Oates said.
Including Saturday against Montana, UNC has six regular-season matches remaining. The Bears host the conference tournament Nov. 24-26.
