Caleb Williams Speaks: Reducing Sacks, Red Zone Efficiency, and Avoiding “Brain Fart” Penalties ...Middle East

Caleb Williams’ performance in Week 8 was criticized on Sunday after the game, but his head coach said on Monday that while it didn’t translate to the box score, he saw tangible growth from his quarterback on tape.

Williams said today during his weekly media availability that he also thought he played better than the box score indicated.

“I would say I made one bad play in a situation where we couldn’t afford it, in that moment, with where we were in the game, and that’s the interception.”

“Other than that, I feel like I played well,” Williams said of his performance on Sunday in Baltimore. “There were a couple of situations where I felt like I could have done a better job, like getting out of bounds and saving a timeout to help us in that situation. It’s always nice to have those timeouts.”

Williams also cited the two intentional grounding penalties as plays he would like to have back from Sunday.

As for the interception, which head coach Ben Johnson called a bad read, and Williams categorized differently on Sunday after the game, Williams had this to say about it today:

“At that time, right after the game, I didn’t get a chance to look over the film—I think it was Kyle [Monangai] that was open in the flat; I think that was a good rep for me to bank. Just being able to see ahead of where I was throwing, and I didn’t see the corner fall off, I thought he was trailing DJ [Moore], and I thought I just threw a bad ball, but the corner was there. I feel like I could still fit it in there, but in that situation, just understand, go get Kye the ball as fast as possible and let him go make a great play.”

Williams has cut his sack rate in half this season, and when asked about how he’s done that on Wednesday, Williams credited his offensive line and skill players for creating a good pocket for him. He also said that his growing comfort in the offense has helped him have a better feel for when to get rid of the football.

“It’s an extreme focus. I don’t want to be one of those guys in year six, where I’m the highest sacked (quarterback) ever in history. I got a great group in front of me; running backs and tight ends, they obviously help out in different situations to block defensive ends, block linebackers, and block blitzes—I think it’s just all of us being on the same page, and that’s part of it. From my side, just being more comfortable and confident in the offense.”

Williams said that he has been emphasizing finding ways to avoid sacks on first and second downs this season, something that was a drive-killer for the Bears last season.

Regarding Chicago’s recent red zone efficiency struggles, Williams chalked righting those woes up to execution.

“It just comes down to execution,” Williams said. “It comes down to details. (For the) Run game, staying on landmarks and the holes, finding those even if it’s not a gaping hole, getting those dirty three or four yards goes a long way. For the pass game, it’s just being on the same page.”

Williams also said he needs to be conscious of using his legs more in those red zone situations.

Head coach Ben Johnson called on the veterans and leaders to correct the penalty problems, and Williams agreed that he and his teammates must do a better job of avoiding “brain fart” moments that lead to penalties.

Williams said that the best teams are player-led, and he and the rest of the Bears’ players have to improve their processes to avoid costly penalties that have been derailing drives and scoring opportunities.
