MARCY, N.Y. — A former prison guard at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy was sentenced Monday in connection to the death of inmate Messiah Nantwi.
Daniel Burger will serve one and one-third to four years in prison for the deadly beating of Nantwi, News10NBC’s Syracuse affiliate reports.
Nantwi died at Mid-State, right across from Marcy Correctional Facility, where Greece native Robert Brooks died.
Burger was initially charged with manslaughter and gang assault. He previously pleaded guilty to offering a false instrument.
Prosecutors charged ten guards involved in the deadly beating of Nantwi, including Burger. Earlier this month, Francis Chandler pleaded guilty to gang assault in connection to Nantwi’s death.

Burger is also one of several officers accused of meeting at a local diner to come up with a false story that nothing inappropriate happened to Nantwi.
Burger’s sentencing comes after one former prison guard was found guilty of murder and two were acquitted in the death of Brooks.
