Dodgers Even It Up, Yamamoto Again, Steele Rehab and Contract, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

The Bears get to face the Ravens’ back-up quarterback today, but they do it without all three of their starting corners. So who has the better injury advantage there?

The Dodgers evened the World Series last night, winning Game Two the way they’ve been the best this postseason: riding their starting pitcher. Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw his second straight complete game, allowing just one run. The complete game from Yamamoto marked the first time since 2001(!) that a starting pitcher has thrown back-to-back complete games in the postseason (Curt Schilling, Diamondbacks). Everyone wants dominant starting pitching in the postseason, but even then, you still don’t expect THIS level of performance. That’s why the Dodgers paid $375 million (posting fee included) to sign him, I suppose.

— Justin Steele (@J_Steele21) October 23, 2025 A stray thought on Steele’s situation: he’s coming back from surgery, hopefully sometime in May or so, and he’ll be in his second-to-final year of arbitration. I wonder if there will be any appetite for he and the Cubs to engage in extension talks when they’re negotiating this year’s arbitration salary. On the one hand, there didn’t seem to be too much eagerness there last year from the Cubs, though maybe there were questions about the elbow from the previous September (not sure if that injury was related to what ultimately wound up requiring surgery). Steele is also now a year closer to free agency, so maybe there would be more interest. I’d certainly like to see the sides at least engage and see what kind of win-win might be possible. For Steele, he could lock down a large contract for the first time in his career, and get a little security in case there are bumps along the way in his comeback season. For the Cubs, they could get a potential front-two guy locked down on a long-term deal with some cost-control baked in. The likely counter arguments are, for Steele, that he could show out the next two years and get a much larger contract in free agency with more distance from surgery; and, for the Cubs, that Steele turns 31 next summer and they’ve already got him on two years of relatively cheap control. How early and how much do they want to pay for his age 33+ seasons? But hey, either way, maybe Steele can come back 100% and be the guy who throws 7+ innings in the postseason for the Cubs like this Dodgers rotation? If the Cubs have hopes on that front, maybe they will be EXTRA deliberate and careful with his rehab early next season, partly to preserve some of those peak innings?
