Brought to you by Spectrum Aquatics, a SwimSwam partner, our Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series celebrates swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Bill Durell, 75, Minnesota Masters: Durell broke the Borboleta mile butterfly male age group record at the Riptide Fall Fling two weeks ago in Apple Valley, Minn., putting up a time of 46:54.15 in the 1650-yard event. At 75, Durell became the oldest swimmer to finish the event, passing John Sulzbach, who did the race in 2009 at the age of 74. “I wish all swimmers would say to themselves, ‘If that old fart can swim distance butterfly, so can I,’” Durell said. Eva Garcia, 12, Rockville Montgomery Swim Club (PV): Garcia set six personal bests at the RMSC October Kick-Off Classic, highlighted by her swims in the breaststroke events. The Rockville Montgomery Swim Club product put up a time of 1:06.47 in the 100 breast to rank 1st this season in the girls’ 11-12 age group, while her time of 2:27.18 in the 200 breast ranks her 2nd this season. Coming into the season, her best times stood at 1:08.98 and 2:33.13, respectively. Garcia also set new bests in the 500 free (5:32.63), 100 back (1:05.58), 100 IM (1:02.51) and 200 IM (2:18.16), with her 100 IM swim also cracking the top 10 this season, moving her to 5th among 11-12s in 2025-26.

Eaton Heng, 11, Xtreme Swim Club (NE): Heng broke five New England Swimming LSC Records in the boys’ 10 & under age group at the Crimson IMR Pentathlon in early October (the swims were done while he was still 10, but he’s since aged up to 11, according to the USA Swimming database). Heng set new NE records in the 100 free (53.57), 100 back (1:00.91), 100 breast (1:09.95), 100 fly (1:01.04) and 100 IM (1:01.61), moving into the top 10 all-time in the boys’ 10 & under age group in four of them. He now ranks 3rd all-time in the 100 free, 4th in the 100 IM, 7th in the 100 breast, 8th in the 100 back and 19th in the 100 fly. One week later, Heng tied the 10 & under NAG record in the 50 free on a relay lead-off, clocking 24.42, and also moved to 2nd all-time in the age group in the 200 IM (2:10.79) and 4th in the 50 back (27.67). At another meet the week after that, his 5:09.61 clocking in the 500 free moved him to 3rd all-time among 10 & under boys.

Emma Li, 13, King Aquatic Club (PN): Li established eight personal best times at the VAST Fall Classic last weekend in Federal Way, ranking 2nd this season among 13-year-old girls in six of them and cracking the top 10 in the 13-14 age group in three of them. Li also set bests in the 50 free (24.53) and 100 free (52.57), ranking her 8th and 5th this season, respectively, among 13-year-old girls.
