Look Who Has the NFL’s Most Explosive Offense ...Middle East

This is a Ben Johnson appreciation post.

The Chicago Bears have never been a team known for its offensive prowess. Because even when it has had elite, Hall of Fame-caliber offensive playmakers, the defense still took center stage. But with that being said, the Ben Johnson era could be different. At a minimum, we are starting to see the tide turn for a team that is starting to show its offensive chops.

When you write about the Bears as much as I do, you come across more numbers than you care to remember. And you’ll often come around facts that stop you in your tracks. This is one of those facts. But it is also one I felt necessary to immediately share with others:

Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears offense has created the most big plays per game this season, with a pace-setting 8.0 per game in the six games they have played this season. No team has more big run plays (runs of 10+ yards) than the Bears, who have had 27 (!) such plays. And while the Bears’ 21 big receiving plays (receptions of 20+ yards) are lagging behind others at the top, it’s not too shabby. Overall, the 48 big plays on offense are the second most in the league. Only the Los Angeles Rams, who have 50, can boas tmore — and they’ve played one more game than the Bears.

Ben Johnson’s offense is making big plays despite not hitting on all cylinders

Through six games (and seven weeks) of the 2025 NFL season, Ben Johnson’s offense ranks 10th in scoring and 12th in yards. It has turned the ball over the seventh-fewest times, which helps matters. And after struggling to get the ground game going, Chicago’s offense ranks seventh in rushing attempts and eighth in yards. And yet, the first-year Bears head coach isn’t totally pleased.

“We haven’t hit our stride yet offensively,” Johnson said, via the Chicago Tribune. “We’re capable of a lot more.”

One aspect of the game I’m sure the Bears want to turn around is its inability to flip turnovers into touchdowns. Chicago’s football team has come up with 15 takeaways during its four-game winning streak. And in those games, the team is averaging 26.8 points per contest. However, only two of those turnovers have been converted into touchdowns. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll gladly take field goals because getting three points is better than getting zero points. However, if Ben Johnson thinks the Bears can be better, then I feel that I should raise my expectations to match those of the head coach. After all, good isn’t enough when better is expected.

The Bears offense still has work to do before it is a fully operational battle station. But every time we have pointed out an area of concern for this offense, the team has made some notable fixes. When pass protection was a concern after two weeks, changes were made on the offensive line. And now, Caleb Williams is being sacked at around a 5 percent clip after being sacked at a nearly 11 percent rate last year. A slow start threatened to lead to major upheaval in the running game, only for D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai to find their footing. So … what’s next?

Ben Johnson needs to get the passing game going with some consistency. The Bears head coach needs Caleb Williams to get in a rhythm and start hitting open targets with regularity. That Chicago has so many big plays on offense is a testament to the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But once everything starts clicking, this will be a dangerous group. Stay tuned.
