I have known Dan Meinholz, CEO and founder of A3 Performance, for 14 years. He is not an outsider selling swimmers a story. Dan was an elite swimmer and coach who knows our sport from the inside. More importantly, he is a husband, father, and passionate founder. A3 Performance did not appear out of nowhere. Dan and his better half, Amy, built A3 the hard way,  with risk, faith, four kids at home, and a belief that swimming deserved better. The documentary film embedded below is about A3 taking on giants, but really, it is about family, grit, and one founder who kept building. — Mel Stewart, CEO SwimSwam

Spend enough time on a pool deck these days, and you’ll notice A3 Performance has become part of the conversation. What was once a relatively under-the-radar brand is now showing up at conference championships, NCAA meets, and international competitions, with top athletes like Katharine Berkoff, AJ Pouch, Phoebe Bacon, and other elite swimmers racing in A3’s new tech suit, PRANA.

For a family-owned company competing against some of the biggest names in swimming, it’s been an impressive climb. From the outside, it might look like A3 appeared out of nowhere. In reality, it took three decades of steady growth, product development, and a family that kept building while much of the swimming world wasn’t paying attention.

Every Great Brand Starts Somewhere

It’s easy to assume the next innovation in swimming will come from the biggest company with the biggest budget. More often than not, though, it starts with a small, nimble team with the courage to do things differently.

When Dan and Amy Meinholz decided to start A3 Performance in 2004, they had four kids at home and had to borrow money to make it happen. It took a leap of faith to make that initial commitment, and that willingness to take risks could be seen as foreshadowing for what the company would become.

Rather than following the market, Dan and Amy invested in new materials, tested their products against the competition, and let the results shape what came next.

Consistency Built Confidence

Competing against industry leaders has never been easy, but A3 quietly carved out its place by continuing to innovate. The company introduced the sport’s first closed-back technical racing suit and later developed the only single-layer tech suit currently on the market. Over time, the athletes took note and, realized that A3 Performance wasn’t like the other swim brands. They had become a fixture in the swim community, working not just to improve their products and brand, but to improve the sport of swimming itself and empower athletes to swim and feel their best.

A Full-Circle Moment

When Katharine Berkoff won gold and broke the American Record in the 50m Backstroke at the World Championships wearing A3, it marked a milestone for a company that had spent decades growing quietly.

Dan Meinholz‘s first reaction wasn’t to celebrate the brand. It was to thank the people behind it and text his team: “Every single one of you made that happen.” It’s an easy detail to overlook, but it says a lot about how A3 got here.

Success wasn’t built around one product or athlete. It was built over decades of hard work and dedication by a small group of people who believed they could do better than industry giants – and they did, time and time again, and will continue to challenge what’s possible for years to come.
