Austin foursome Die Spitz tears through its set at LA’s Lodge Room ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

As Die Spitz finished up its hour-plus set at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles, the four bandmembers threw their arms around each other in an embrace — not directed out at the crowd like a triumphant curtain call — but as if sharing a quiet huddle in celebration of another stage vanquished.

“When you’re with your three best friends, you can do anything in the world!” singer-guitarist Eleanor Livingston had told the crowd earlier over a squall of growing feedback, and based on the evening’s performance, you’d be smart to believe her.

Die Spitz talk new music ahead of Southern California tour stops

In support of the band’s debut album, “Something to Consume,” out now on Third Man Records, the Austin, Texas, foursome are on a Southern California tour swing that, after the Lodge Room on Thursday, Oct. 16, will have them playing the Soda Bar in San Diego on Oct. 17 and the Constellation Room in Santa Ana on Oct. 18.

Along with Livingston, the group consists of guitarist-singer Ava Schrobilgen, drummer-singer Chloe De St. Aubin and bass (and sometime toy xylophone) player Kate Halter. (As well, Schrobilgen and De St. Aubin trade off on drums and guitar, to give each the ability to sing their own songs.)

Flying through songs that at times employ sludgy guitar riffs, thrashing rhythms and bouncing bass lines, the band induced bouts of good-natured moshing and stage-diving during the set. Both the performers and road crew kept an eye out for the safety of women in the audience. Not only did they direct the crowd to make room so they could “bring the girlies to the front,” but the band members were smiling, pointing and even complimenting the crowd on its dancing.

The performance, which had a few ramshackle moments early on, got sharper as the band played deeper into the set. Highlights included Schrobilgen forging the way through “American Porn,” her growling vocals telling a story of sexist, dehumanizing attention; de St. Aubin coming out from behind the drum kit to sing and play guitar on “Punishers” (overcoming some sound problems) and “Voir Dire”; and Livingston, who could ably command the crowd from the center mic, delivering a manifesto with “Riding With My Girls.” And throughout, bassist Halter kept the energy high, jumping, kicking and, at one point, balancing her bass guitar on top of her head.

While known for its high spirits, the band mostly let the music do the talking – though brief political comments against ICE and in support of trans rights – were slipped in during feedback-drenched intros.

And there was just silly fun, too. Like when De St. Aubin, Halter and Livingston returned for the encore wearing dresses they’d changed into.

“They didn’t tell me about the dresses,” said Schrobilgen, clad in a T-shirt as before, in mock outrage.
