BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A Brighton native continues to shine on the baseball diamond as the Toronto Blue Jays inch closer to the World Series.

Ernie Clement, infielder for the Blue Jays and Brighton High School grad, is making his hometown proud with a dominant performance in the offseason.

Game three of the ALCS wrapped up Wednesday night as the Blue Jays secured a 13-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. Clement has had quite the postseason, batting 462 in the playoffs.

Back at home, Brighton is rooting for him every step of the way. News10NBC caught up with faculty at Brighton to hear how cool it is for them and the students.

“I remember him playing in little league. I coached him in little league and coming up all the way through,” said Clement’s high school baseball coach Jason Wasserman. “And, just step-by-step, and now just seeing him on the biggest stage of them all, just, there’s no bigger thrill to see a ball player like that.”

“First guy out of the dugout, first guy in the dugout.. those are the types of things that are really difficult to coach,” said Clement’s high school assistant coach John Feltes. “But he has exemplified those tactics and tricks and skills that has gotten him to be where he is.”

Brighton is so proud, even Yankees fans find themselves celebrating.

“I know a lot of us here are Yankees fans,” said Clement’s former teacher, Sam Rizzo. “Um, so you know… after the series I said, ‘As a Yankees fan I’m kind of a little depressed. But as an Ernie Clement fan, you know we’re all ecstatic.'”

Brighton Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kevin McGowan shared his admiration for Clement.

“I’m a way bigger Ernie fan or Brighton fan than I am anything else,” said Dr. McGowan. “But it’s been really exciting. Ernie’s just a better human than he is even a baseball player.”

“The first this he does when he comes home is ask where and when practice is so he can stop by and just say, ‘Hi,’ to everybody,” said Wasserman.

“Always going to be somebody that the coaches look at and then talk to their young athletes and go, ‘This is where you can go if you put some time and effort into it,'” said Feltes.

So, what’s next? The Blue Jays will look for another win in Game 4 against the Mariners, this time in Seattle. You can catch the game on Wednesday night, starting at 8:33 p.m.
