What does the Diamondbacks' depth chart look like before free agency, trades begin?
“It was such a good experience,” Lawlar told Arizona Sports in May about his first winter with Licey. “To have some of those shared experiences with the Latin guys and bring those memories and experiences back to the states has helped my game … More reps and more baseball activity in that sort of environment is going to translate to the major league level. I always say experience is the best teacher.”
Lawlar will receive in-game reps in front of passionate fans, an environment likened to major league playoff games.
The 23-year-old is coming off a choppy 2025 season during which he dominated in Triple-A Reno, went 0-for-19 in the major leagues, was sent back down, injured his hamstring, missed six weeks and spent the final month of the year back in the major leagues.
After a brutal 0-for-31 start, Lawlar hit .333 in 41 plate appearances down the stretch for the Diamondbacks with seven doubles and two stolen bases. He had some hiccups defensively, and the D-backs opted to use him as a designated hitter and pinch hitter down the stretch as they fought for a postseason spot.
With Triple-A Reno in 2025, Lawlar hit .313 with a .966 OPS, 11 home runs and 20 steals, as he had continued to showcase his power-speed potential in the minor leagues.
“We’re signing a player who has already proven he can impact the league,” Audo Vicente, Licey general manager and former Diamondbacks minor leaguer, said in a press release. “An experienced and highly versatile player who can help us in the middle of the infield.”
Lawlar hit .237 with three home runs and nine steals for Licey last winter. He played third base and shortstop in the Dominican last winter, and his positioning this time will be something to watch with general manager Mike Hazen mentioning his curiosity of Lawlar trying out center field at some point.
