Ayers, 24, was the Cubs’ 19th round pick last year, and was putting up great numbers in his full-season debut when his regular season ended in late-July. Because of his age and collegiate experience, you would’ve liked to have seen him reach High-A by the end of the year and show that the bat was simply too good there, as well. Since that was not possible, the Arizona Fall League feels like a pretty good substitute in his situation, and things could not have started any better.

Not only that, but Ayers is getting time this fall catching more experienced pitchers, and controlling more experienced running games. A perfect developmental opportunity for a guy who could put himself squarely on the prospect radar next season if he’s able to, for example, reach Double-A by the second half.

The rest of the Cubs’ AFL crew is here if you missed it. Cole Mathis has had a couple good games to start things off, and Luis Martinez-Gomez and Koen Moreno have made scoreless appearances.
