Tottenham loanee will be future captain – he’s already matched Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane test said it all ...Middle East

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been told they can be really excited about Luka Vuskovic. There’s no doubt that he’s going to be captain.

The 18-year-old joined Spurs a month after Harry Kane left, and yet they’ve played the same number of games for the Lilywhites since.

Tottenham swooped to sign Croatian starlet Vuskovic from Hajduk Split in September 2023 on a deal until 2030.

However, he didn’t arrive in north London for two years due to FIFA rules on overseas players under 18 following the UK’s EU exit.

During that period, Vuskovic was shipped out on loan to Polish outfit Radomiak Radom and Belgian side Westerlo, respectively.

The £12million star announced himself to Spurs fans by scoring and assisting on his debut in a 2-0 pre-season win against Reading in July.

Vuskovic was offloaded to Bundesliga giants Hamburg to further his development, with Martin Jol making the bold prediction that he will be better than Cristian Romero.

Two months into the new campaign, the defender is well on his way to be the Argentine’s long-term successor as Spurs captain.

European football broadcaster Andy Brassell told talkSPORT.com: “I think Spurs fans can be really excited about Luka Vuskovic.

“I think he’s made the totally right move as well. So not only is he getting to play in the Bundesliga every week, but as well, there was also already a connection with the club.

“Even though he’s 18, he feels like he’s at home because his older brother, Mario, was at the club and he’s still sort of with the club.

“Of course, he’s been serving a drugs ban for quite a while now. But Luka said right at the beginning, because of my brother, I know everyone at the club anyway. So it’s just like arriving home, really.”

Vuskovic vs Kane

The centre-back endured a baptism of fire in his debut for HSV against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Merlin Polzin’s side conceded four times in the first 29 minutes against Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz and eventually lost 5-0.

“For someone like him to be given that responsibility, he’s got such enormously high standards of himself,” Brassell added.

“He spoke after the game where they went to Bayern early on and they lost 5-0, which, if you look at Hamburg’s results in Munich down the years, 5-0 is not actually that bad. It’s below their average beating. So they must’ve been doing something right.

“But Vuskovic was asked about it afterwards. He’d been expressed into the XI. As an 18-year-old in an away game at Bayern, I mean, it doesn’t get any more difficult than that, facing someone else with a Tottenham connection in Harry Kane, of course.

“He stood there in front of the journalists and said, ‘Yeah, I didn’t think I played him that well. I was a bit disappointed in myself, to be honest.’

“The journalists there, and certainly I, looking at the interview, thought, ‘What are you expecting of yourself?’ But he’s expecting a lot of himself. And you see it in every little move he makes.”

Vuskovic broke a finger punching a post

In just his second appearance on loan, the teenager scored his first goal in the 2-1 win over Heidenheim, with his opener being Hamburg’s first Bundesliga goal since their relegation in 2018.

Yet he celebrated with a broken finger he’d received for punching the post in frustration after missing a sitter before that.

Before the international break, Vuskovic was an instrumental part of a Hamburg defence that kept successive Bundesliga clean sheets.

The first of which, a goalless draw with Union Berlin, saw him break a five-year record across Europe’s top five leagues by winning 18 aerial duals in a single match.

That feat saw German media nickname him ‘Air Vuskovic’, while he has quickly become a fan favourite among fans as well.

According to Hamburg, 1,000 of his replica shirts have already been sold, and he is seen as a key factor in their Bundesliga survival.

Vuskovic a future Tottenham captain

Vuskovic emulated Jude Bellingham by being voted September‘s Bundesliga rookie of the month on his first time of asking.

Brassell continued: “He’s just such an engaging watch.

“He’s someone, even at this early age, I suppose, a little bit in a different way, like Lucas Bergvall, who I think from the moment he came into the Tottenham team, you’re like, ‘Yeah, this bloke’s gonna be the captain at some point.

“’There’s no doubt that he’s gonna be the captain at some point.’ And you can definitely see that for Vuskovic as well.

“Someone who’s confident but not arrogant. Someone who knows he’s got ability, but expects an enormous lot from himself and doesn’t make excuses and is aware that he’s fallible and he’s gonna make mistakes.

“What’s gonna happen over the next little while is really important because, of course, results have improved for them.

“They’re in the top 10, which is amazing. They’re ninth. When you look at them coming up and you think, right, if there’s a team that’s going straight back down, it’s probably them.

“Of course, they’ve been out of the Bundesliga for seven years, having never been relegated before that.

“But a 4-0 win against Mainz at the weekend. Mainz are decent as well. They were really, really good last season and weren’t that far off getting into the Champions League. They’re in the Conference League this season. And Vuskovic looked great again.

“For them to finally beat a side with comfort that are a really good side, especially after the week they’ve had where they’ve lost [Arsenal loanee Fabio] Vieira for quite a few weeks through injury.

“Wamed Omari, who is, I would say, the best defender, who’s on loan from Rennes, he’s injured and gonna be out till Christmas, which is pretty disappointing for them.

“For them to respond with a performance like that and for Vuskovic to be able to step up after Omari’s injury and say, ‘Okay, right, I don’t care how old I am. I’m the leader of this defence now.’

“And to keep a clean sheet against a decent Mainz attack, I think, is super impressive.”

Hamburg chief makes Vuskovic transfer claim

His eye-catching performances led HSV Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa to reject claims Spurs could recall him in January.

In fact, the Bundesliga outfit told Transfermarkt.de they already want to extend Vuskovic’s loan deal from Tottenham.

Costa said: “The Luka Vuskovic issue has been on our minds throughout the summer. We always had the clear intention of signing him – and he committed to us relatively early on.

“We didn’t want to take Luka away from Tottenham, but instead wanted to create a win-win-win situation. We’re helping Tottenham, Luka is helping us, and we’re all helping him.

“He’s playing very convincingly, has a great charisma, and gives us a lot. We’re happy he’s here. It’s only October, so much can happen between now and May; there are many variables.

Vuskovic has quickly become a leader in the Hamburg defenceGetty

“As of now, there’s no contractual option. Based on what we’ve seen so far, we’d like to keep him longer – absolutely. We certainly wouldn’t mind.

“The question is how we get there, what Tottenham’s plan is, and how Luka’s season is going. But that’s absolute crystal ball gazing, and as of today, there’s absolutely no way to assess it.

“We had very constructive discussions with Tottenham; they’re a top-professional club, judging by the communication with loan manager Andy Scoulding.

“They’re closely monitoring the player, which shows how they assess Luka. Tottenham isn’t interested in weakening us or ruining the loan.

“It’s understandable that they’re trying to protect themselves against possible worst-case scenarios. Otherwise, I don’t want to comment further.

“I believe Tottenham also knows how good the situation here is for Luka. That’s why I hope we never get into a situation where we have to think about anything else.”
