That’s particularly true for a Padres organization that already had him as their bench coach.
The Padres job, by the way, is just one of a whopping eight managerial openings right now. It’s entirely possible that Flaherty will receive other interview interest, too, hence the mention from Heyman about the O’s.
Flaherty, 39, was originally a Cubs prospect before being plucked in the Rule 5 Draft, and ultimately playing most of his time in the big leagues with the Orioles. He then joined the Padres front office and coaching staff, before coming over to the Cubs for the 2024 season as Counsell’s bench coach, where he’s served the last two seasons.
I’l decline to make a prediction here, as managerial searches are typically idiosyncratic in ways you can’t predict from the outside. But I will assume that Counsell and the Cubs are going to be keeping tabs on possible replacements for the bench coach job just in case Flaherty gets a managerial opportunity.
