Drake Maye is looking like a playoff quarterback to me.
While his alma mater is engulfed in controversy over its new football coach, the former Carolina QB continues to light up the NFL and his record and stats back up the praise.
Maye led the New England Patriots, whose former coach ironically is in the UNC squabble, to their third straight win and will be favored in their next three games. That would run the rebuilding Pats’ record to 7-2 and put them into contention for the playoffs. Early in the season, they had one-possession losses to the Raiders and Steelers, who both probably don’t want to face Maye again.
After playing his best NFL game last Sunday night in an upset win over the Bills in Buffalo, Maye had another stellar performance in New Orleans, where the Patriots hung on for a 25-19 win over the improving Saints. He had three touchdown passes and no interceptions, and there was a fourth bomb that was nullified by a phantom penalty that wasn’t.
Maye is looking like a future all-star with his skill set and composure against the rush, his uncanny running ability after escaping the pocket and his deft touch whether in the flat, to the sideline or downfield. He can’t be called the best quarterback in the league, but his statistics through five games are near the top of the entire 30-team NFL.
Maye has a 107.3 passer rating, which is third behind Patrick Mahommes and Josh Allen, considered the best two QBs in the league. He is fifth in overall passing yards and in pass completions he is second to only to the Lions Jared Goff. Besides doing all that, he has been sacked 17 times, second most.
Blessed with a much improved corps of receivers, Maye completed 18 passes against the Saints to nine different targets. Stefan Diggs, the pro bowler in Buffalo, signed with New England and is the slot back the Pats have missed since Julian Edelman. He caught three passes, including the rainbow 71-yarder that was called back. Kayson Boutte had five catches, including two touchdowns. Speedster DeMario Douglas also had three receptions, one for 53 yards and New England’s first score.
“You’ve got to celebrate winning in this league,” Maye said afterward, “no matter how much better we could have played, how much we left on the plate. We just want to keep building momentum, week to week. It was great to hit some long shots to guys who made great plays.”
Maye was a two-year starter af Carolina after redshirting and playing behind Sam Howell as a freshman and the next season made first team All-ACC and won the conference Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year awards.
This was also a Duke-Carolina Day of sorts, as Daniel Jones hit Josh Downs with a touchdown pass in the Colts’ win over Arizona and moved to 5-1 on the season.
