Andrew Flintoff tipped for shock new job following bitter Northern Superchargers departure ...Middle East

Steve Harmison suggested Andrew Flintoff could immediately become the head coach of a different Hundred franchise.

Flintoff quit as Northern Superchargers head coach, suggesting he had been undervalued.

He was in charge for two seasons, but ahead of next year’s edition, the England legend has gone.

It was his first role as a senior coach and Harmison has suggested he could join another side in the Hundred.

Andy Flower has departed the Nottingham-based Hundred team to head to the capital.

The Zimbabwean has taken on the role as London Spirit head coach, and Flintoff’s old teammate Harmison thinks the Rockets would be an option.

However, he doesn’t want him to get involved in franchise cricket due to his role in the England set-up.

Flintoff is also the head coach of the England Lions development side.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT.com, he said: “I could see him going to Trent Rockets because there is a vacancy there. Will he hang on for Manchester Originals?

“But it’s better for English cricket that he’s not doing the franchise cricket because I think the franchise is shocking. You’ve got a competition of eight teams and there are not many English coaches.

“If you are looking at trying to have a pathway for England players, where is your pathway for the next England coach from England after Brendon McCullum.

“You could argue it was coming with an Andrew Flintoff-type. But, at this moment in time, it wasn’t the right thing for him. He’s moved out, somebody will move in; he’s doing a great job with the Lions, shaping future players.

“Where it goes when it comes to the franchise stuff, God only knows. But I am pleased he’s not doing that anymore. Some of these young Lions players will get the full attention of Andrew Flintoff, where before, he has had one eye on the franchise world.”

Flintoff failed to agree terms with the Superchargers’ owners, the Sun Group.

They are one of a new group of owners in The Hundred and are an Indian media company, paying £100million to buy the Headingley-based team.

However, they’ve already lost Flintoff, who aimed a parting shot as well.

He said: “I genuinely don’t do it for the money – although it’s nice – but I’m worth more than just over a quarter of the salary of other head coaches.

“We have new owners, and I spoke to them and said: ‘Yeah, fine, make us an offer.’

“I wasn’t encouraged they wanted me anyway, and you want to feel valued. So I said that it’s not going to work for me, and they weren’t going to move on it.

“So, unfortunately, I’m not going to do it, which is sad.

“The past two years, I felt we were building somewhere really nice, and I’d have loved to have seen it through.”

What did Flintoff tell Harmy?

Well, not much, though they did talk about plenty of other stuff, which will be available across talkSPORT very soon.

However, Harmy is very much of the view that Flintoff doesn’t need to stay somewhere he doesn’t feel respected.

He said: “He hasn’t told me anything. I’ve just been with him for an hour. He hasn’t told me anything about that – I didn’t want to talk to him about that because there are other things I could talk to him about.

“But people are allowed their opinions and how they want their environments run, and the world of franchise cricket looks as though they aren’t bothered about is coaching these teams.

“Some of them aren’t bothered about who is playing for these teams – it’s a plaything for them.

“What you find with a lot of good people and good coaches, and Andrew is a principled person, and that if these [owners] aren’t on the same wavelength, he doesn’t need it. He doesn’t need to be in cricket.

“He loves the game. He took the job from Rob Key, and we all know the backstory of the crash, but he took the job and got back into cricket because he’ll always be a cricket-loving man, and if he believed these people weren’t on the same page as him, the difference between a nought on a cheque doesn’t really make a difference.

“It’s the journey and the process of where he wants to go, and if the people aren’t right for him, he’ll move on.”

It is early days to see what Flintoff might do, but the cricket icon loves the game and will surely be back involved.
