If it’s anything like the last time they played each other, the Foothill-Crean Lutheran girls volleyball game Monday at Crean Lutheran will be very entertaining.
Foothill beat Crean Lutheran in five sets, 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 30-28, 15-9, in a Freeway League match Sept. 25 at Foothill.
Their match on Monday is set for 5:45 p.m.
Both teams are much improved over last season. Crean Lutheran is 23-2 overall and 6-1 league while Foothill went into its match Thursday night 20-6 overall and 5-1 league. (Its league loss was to third-place El Dorado.) Foothill last year was 6-25 overall and 3-5 in the Crestview League. Crean was 12-14 overall and 2-6 in the Crestview League.
“The girls gained a lot of experience in club volleyball,” said Crean Lutheran coach Anna Dyer, “and we had 10 returning players from last year. We had a great foundation coming back.”
Major building blocks of that foundation are senior libero Elizabeth Park and junior setters Jaylin Kim and Hannah Yang. Dyer said the Saints get consistent contributions from many others.
Foothill also brought back plenty of varsity-experienced players, like senior opposite hitter Haley Langdon and senior setter Sophia Reynolds.
Then there is Knights sophomore outside hitter June Stringham who has been a leading points-getter.
“June has been phenomenal,” Foothill coach Aaron Wolfe said. “She has great leadership skills, great tenacity and she takes the swings for us in the big moments.”
Big moments will be plentiful Monday at Crean Lutheran.
