You didn’t have to be a devout metalhead to be stoked about the long-awaited return of Pantera in 2022, even with late member ‘Dimebag’ Darrell and his brother Vinnie Paul being replaced by Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
Powerhouse vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown returned to carry the Pantera torch — and haven’t looked back since.
Now, after many successful reunion shows, several to sold-out crowds, Anselmo’s other ’90s band is roaring back, known for blending more bluesy Southern rock and sludge metal into its sound than Pantera’s signature groove-metal riffs.

Down came about in 1991, but it wasn’t until years later debut album NOLA put the “supergroup” on the map with their best-known songs, “Stone the Crow” and “Bury Me in Smoke.” In 2003, Pantera officially disbanded, followed by the murder of aforementioned ‘Dimebag,’ putting the band’s future into even more question after Vinnie Paul’s unexpected death at the age of 54 in 2018.
Down was more than a placeholder for Pantera fans, and just like diehard headbangers were wishing for new Pantera music, the same can be said for Down, who haven’t released original material since 2014’s Down IV – Part II EP.
Their next full-length album “Volume V” is slated for a November 20 release, the first in nearly 20 years since Down III: Over the Under in 2007. The New Orleans-based band have already thrilled fans by launching a music video for the first track off the new project, “Blood Oath”, too.
The nearly six-minute track, “Blood Oath,” starts off as a slow burn until Down’s thunderous riffs and Anselmo’s unmistakable voice kick into overdrive at about the 1:45 mark, surely taking both Pantera and Down fans down Memory Lane.
