It’s funny how this was a whole huge article in The Athletic, and then immediately came up with respect to a couple big Cubs moments in Game Two against the Brewers.
Here’s Marquee discussing whether the Cubs tipped before the two three-run homers that were the difference in the game:
Were the Cubs tipping their pitches tonight? @ColeWright & Ryan Sweeney discuss on Cubs Postgame Live pic.twitter.com/hNtbieEza8
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) October 7, 2025Yes, it’s possible Shōta Imanaga and Daniel Palencia were tipping pitches in Game Two, as Marquee discussed, but you have to remember that players are also often faking signals out there at second base just to mess with pitchers and catchers.
I think the first one in the clip, on the Jackson Chourio homer off of Palencia, is a clear hand signal (less clear to me that the second involved signals). No question about it. But what we can’t know is whether Caleb Durbin had actually picked up something Palencia was tipping, or if that was all just gamesmanship, and Chourio wasn’t even looking. Then again, the Brewers were cited by name as one of the teams that are the best at picking up pitch-tips, so, like I said, you have to watch out for it.
What’s also pretty important from where I sit? The Imanaga sweeper was belt high and not where he wants that pitch. The Palencia fastball was way too close to middle-middle. Maybe the batters had some foreknowledge, maybe they didn’t. But those weren’t well-executed pitches either way.
I suppose the lesson for tonight: make sure you aren’t tipping your pitches, boys, and also make sure you execute your pitches well. Nothing revolutionary there.
Oh, and, while we’re on the subject, maybe pick a little something up from the Brewers while you’re at it? Would help to have some baserunners, I suppose.
