Is help on the way in Cincinnati?
As Jake Browning continues to struggle and murmurs of a quarterback change fill the air, we now know who won’t be replacing him.
Cincinnati announced on Tuesday that they have released quarterback Mike White from their practice squad.
White was signed on September 16 to the Bengals’ practice squad following Joe Burrow’s injury, where he spent the past three games.
This now opens the door for the Bengals to potentially pursue another quarterback, with speculation swirling that either Jameis Winston or Russell Wilson could be traded to the Queen City franchise from the New York Giants.
According to The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr, the quarterbacks currently on Cincinnati’s roster outside of Jake Browning — Brett Rypien and Sean Clifford — are not being considered to replace Browning this weekend when the Bengals travel to Green Bay to face the Packers.
This brings the speculation back to Winston, Wilson, and maybe even Kirk Cousins in Atlanta.
For the first time since Burrow went down, head coach Zac Taylor was not definitive in his commitment to Jake Browning as the starting quarterback moving forward.
“We’ll see where it goes,” Taylor said at his Monday news conference. “I think, like all personnel decisions, we’ve got to evaluate it. Jake’s been very accountable for how the game went for him.
“I’ve got to be accountable for how the game went for me as well. And so we’ll continue to progress here through the days.”
It’s looking bleak in Cincinnati following a third consecutive blowout loss, with the Bengals now having been outscored 69–9 in first halves.
Browning (80 for 124, 757 yards, 6-8 TD-INT ratio, 70.5 passer rating) sits at the bottom of the league in EPA per dropback and interception percentage among qualifying quarterbacks.
Browning has been a disaster in the last three gamesGetty The answer to the QB position in Cincinnati may not currently be on the rosterGettyBrowning is winless in three starts this season, completing 64.5 per cent of his passes. Before three late scores in garbage time against Detroit, he had failed to lead a touchdown drive in 19 straight possessions.
That’s why there’s reason to believe—and real smoke—that the Bengals may look outside the organization to find a quarterback solution. Browning isn’t getting it done, playing well below the level he showed in 2023 when he stepped in for an injured Burrow and went 4-3.
There’s been no sign of that 2023 Browning in the last three games. And no, the garbage-time drives don’t count.
No one has taken the team’s shortcomings harder than Browning, who has owned up to all of his mistakes. He isn’t shying away from his poor play and decision-making.
“I need to play better,” Browning said after Sunday’s 37-24 loss to the Detroit Lions, where he threw three interceptions. “There’s literally no hiding from that. I don’t care if every person on the team says they need to play better, it starts with me playing better at the quarterback position. That’s not on [Zac Taylor]. It’s on me. I need to stop throwing interceptions.
“I threw three picks that were just bad and there’s no hiding from that. It was bad football from me. Trying to force things that aren’t there and as a result just completely screwing over the team. It hurts. There’s no way to hide from it. I did not play well enough to give our team a chance to win. It’s brutal.

“I feel like I let the whole team down. I feel like I let the fans down,” Browning continued. “There’s no hiding from that.
“I feel a great responsibility to get back on track. I need to find ways to improve and I will. I’m never gonna fold. I’m gonna spend a lot of time here in the facility this week trying to find ways to get better and put us in a situation where we can win some games.
“Whether it gets better or not, that’s to be determined, that’s the unknown, but it will not be because of lack of effort and lack of dedication to trying to get better and put our team in better positions to win.”
It remains to be seen if Browning will get another chance to right the ship, but if he does, this could be it.
Winston, Wilson or Cousins could soon be on the way.
