VICTOR, N.Y. — The Western New York Wreckers, Upstate New York’s only wheelchair rugby team, hosted its annual tournament, “The Wrecking Ball,” at Pinnacle Athletic Campus. The event featured six teams, including four from the U.S. and two from Ontario, Canada.
Wheelchair rugby is a full-contact sport played with four players from each team on the court at a time. Players use modified armored wheelchairs to slam and crash into each other, scoring by getting the ball across the goal line. While the sport is full-contact, personal contact is prohibited. The Wreckers’ website specifically bans eye-gouging and ear-biting, with violations resulting in penalty box time.
“The end result is never really in our favor, but, I mean, we like to go out there and play well, be competitive,” Dawson Broad from the WNY Wreckers said. “I think over the years, I’ve been around about two years, from my first tournament till now we’re a lot more competitive — so I mean, we’re getting there and we’re progressing; and I mean, I couldn’t ask for a better tournament so far.”
