Enhanced Box Score: CUBS WIN! ADVANCE TO THE NLDS! ...Middle East

HARD. FOUGHT. VICTORY.

What an unbelievably stressful end to an unbelievably stressful game at the end of an incredibly tight and stressful series. That Padres bullpen was EVERY BIT as good as advertised, and that was them being deployed in ultra-aggressive fashion. Today especially, when Padres Manager Mike Shildt called for one of his top relievers, Jeremiah Estrada, with no outs in the SECOND INNING. And then called on his closer, Robert Suarez, in the sixth.

But like Game 1 at Wrigley Field, the Cubs’ bats did just enough, with PCA hitting the go-ahead run in the second, Dansby Swanson walking in a run shortly thereafter, and Michael Busch providing a little bit of insurance with a HUGE homer off Suarez late.

On the Cubs side of the pitching ledger, you have to think that went exactly as Craig Counsell would’ve written it up (until the very end): Jameson Taillon was absolutely dominant through four innings, getting pulled preemptively for lefty Caleb Thielbar as the Padres’ pocket of lefties came up.

Thielbar got through those guys before Counsell turned it over to Daniel Palencia, who went 1.1 scoreless against the righties, before again being pulled preemptively (again) for lefty Drew Pomeranz, who took care of his business.

After that, the top of the Padres order got to face Brad Keller, who got through the 8th inning, but gave up a basket shot homer to lead off the ninth and then hit TWO batters. But Andrew Kittredge came in for the THIRD straight game and got the job done. Cubs win.

For no reason whatsoever, I have officially changed my position to anti-robot umpires for balls and strikes. No further questions.

There is going to be SO SO SO much to dissect from this game, including how awesome Jameson Taillon was and how many Cubs demons were exorcised (Ian Happ doubled and had a sac bunt, Kyle Tucker had two hits, PCA had THREE hits, including the go-ahead, game-winning run early on, and so on).

But there’s only ONE guy who gets Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game honors — and he’s the series MVP (to me, at least) — as well. And that’s Dansby FREAKIN SWANSON.

The Chicago Cubs shortstop was an absolute MENACE on the defensive side of the baseball all series and especially tonight. He deserves almost as much credit for holding the Padres to four runs over three games as the entire Cubs pitching staff. Just banger play after banger play. And even when he didn’t come up with the ball cleanly, he knocked it down, stuck with it, and gunned guys out at first base.

It was an incredible display of defense, and I couldn’t be more impressed.

Cubs win. Cubs advance. Sing the song. Fly the flag. And get ready for the Brewers. We’re headed to Milwaukee.
