ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Monroe County Board of Elections has moved all of its operations into a new, more secure location in the City of Rochester.
The days of storing voting machines in one place and processing ballots in another are over. The Board of Elections has moved the entirety of its department to a new facility along Smith Street in Rochester. All inspector training will happen at the facility, the bi-partisan staff has moved to it and all 1200 voting machines will be stored and serviced there.
The only time those machines will leave the building will be for elections, “They’ll drive in one gate, go out the other gate so it’s even easier for the election inspectors and we’re putting in place procedures right this year that are going to be more secure for Election Day as well, in terms of transmitting results on election night,” explains Peter Elder, the Republican Elections Commissioner.
“From a security standpoint, the chain of custody is improved,” Jackie Ortiz, Democratic Elections Commissioner says, “there isn’t this need to move the ballots that get mailed to the county office building but get processed over at Brighton Henrietta town line road… so, the elimination of steps and chain of custody really is strengthened when there is only one location for everything to be housed under.”
The BOE has an annual budget around $15 million which is funded by Monroe County taxpayers, “the voters over this 30 year lease are actually going to save money for the board of elections facility, it’s a long lease but we were at the county office building for 50 years,” Elder says.
You also won’t be voting the same way you have been in the past, this will be the first general election using the new voting machines. “Testing of them has done well, the testing is going on right now for them before they’re delivered to the polling sites so we haven’t had any concerns, voters like them, they’re easy to use,” Elder says.
County leaders, who approved money for the move, say in the end it should help all voters feel more secure. “The transparent display of what’s going on in the board of elections, because that is one system that we cannot undermine the trust and faith of, voters deserve to have faith that when they go in to cast their ballot, the ballot will be cast for who they’re choosing,” Adam Bello, Monroe County Executive, says.
