'People aren't paying attention to climate change,' says Wagner Moura following release of timely Netflix film The Last House ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

The Last House issues an urgent statement more timely than some would think in a sci-fi thriller.

At first days go by, but those days turn into weeks and those weeks turn into months and before they know it, they have been stuck inside their home for five years with a raging storm around them.

The youngest Delgado, Ruth, grows uncomfortable with the constant capturing and killing of the animals and soon becomes sympathetic to the very creatures keeping her and her family hostage.

As the Delgados become desperate to escape when they realise the creatures are able to open the door when they please, it's a final act of mercy from Jason when he drops a blade, resisting killing one of the creatures, that allows the Delgado family to finally be free – as the words, "It's their home too" echo in his ears.

On the movie being indicative of our environment today, Moura told Radio Times: "Oh, absolutely. I've been here in Europe since April and it's so hot. And I think that climate change is a thing and people are not really paying attention to it.

"So for sure, the film brings this idea of we really have to take care of our home. But the entire planet as a home, too. Like, it feels like a cliché thing to say, but it is true."

The team also sourced costumes and props secondhand, used responsibly sourced lumber, and implemented on-site recycling and composting programmes.

"There were some extremely deliberate choices made that I cannot even begin to understand how they were able to execute," Lee previously said. "What they accomplished was truly astounding because to create a realistic sense of aging is, I think, really hard, and it felt so essential to us as actors to really feel like the house had aged with us."
