The high school junior is a versatile swimmer who specializes in the 50-200 freestyles in addition to both IMs and the 200 backstroke. All of her best times were set within the past 18 months, showing she’s on a strong trajectory with two full seasons before arriving in Chapel Hill.

Bryne’s target meets for the 2024-25 season were the Winter Junior Championships in December, the Pacific Far Western Championships in April, and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) High School State Championships in May.

At Winter Juniors, Bryne produced season bests in the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 back, with her highest placement coming in the 400 IM, where she hit the wall 29th in 4:22.73. She also finished 43rd in the 200 IM (2:02.97), 58th in the 200 back (2:02.25), and led off Alto’s 21st-place 200 free relay in a personal best of 23.21.

Bryne really shined at the Pacific Far Western meet, where she logged her current lifetime bests in the 100 back, 200 free, and 400 IM. She walked away with gold in the 200 IM with a season best of 2:01.12, while also nabbing triple bronze: 55.88 in the 100 back, 2:01.34 in the 200 back, and 1:49.73 in the 200 free for her first ever sub-1:50 swim. She rounded out the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM, stopping the clock at 4:16.85.

Representing Los Altos High School at the CIF competition, she broke two minutes for the first time in the 200 IM with a 1:59.83 in prelims, then chopped a few tenths off to take runner-up in the final at 1:59.54. She also recorded 51.53 for 20th in the 100 free and helped the 200 free relay take 15th with a 23.03 anchor leg.

Top SCY Times: 50 Freestyle: 23.21 100 Freestyle: 50.73 200 Freestyle: 1:49.73 200 Backstroke: 2:00.52 200 IM: 1:59.54 400 IM: 4:16.85

Under the direction of head coach Mark Gangloff, the Tar Heel women finished sixth out of 15 teams at the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships.

The conference meet offers ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, and it took times of 22.41, 48.72, 1:46.56, and 52.69 to make the top 24 in the 50-200 free. Marks of 1:58.69 and 4:16.30 were required in the IMs, while 1:56.25 advanced in the 200 back. Byrne’s current best in the 400 IM is just 0.55 shy of the 2025 time to make finals, and with two full years of swimming before arriving on campus, she is primed to have an immediate impact for the team.

According to the team’s 2024–25 depth chart, Bryne’s personal best in the 400 IM would have ranked her sixth, while she would have sat seventh in the 200 IM, eighth in the 50 free and 200 free, ninth in the 200 back, and 11th in the 100 free.

Byrne joins Maddy Boland, Sofie Vanyo, and Sloane Barr in committing to UNC’s Class of 2031.
