Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll will receive an apology from the PGA of America for the abuse they suffered at the Ryder Cup.
McIlroy received a whole host of verbal abuse from the crowd at Bethpage Black throughout the iconic event in New York.
The Northern Irishman shouted back at USA fans on-course and was seen calling for someone to be thrown out too after a homophobic slur was aimed at him.
And that’s just a short summary of the things that the Team Europe superstar and teammate Shane Lowry endured.
On top of that, McIlroy’s wife Erica shockingly had a drink thrown at her as they walked through the course.
She was also reported to be in tears amid the abuse her husband and the rest of the European team were receiving at the Ryder Cup.
The pair, along with the victorious Team Europe, managed to put the vile abuse behind them to celebrate their historic win.
However, the actions of the US fans in New York have become a major talking point and now they are set to receive an apology.
PGA of America CEO Derek Spague has revealed that he will be saying sorry to McIlroy and his wife in the near future.
Spague told GolfChannel.com: “I haven’t spoken to Rory or Erica [McIlroy], I do plan on sending them an e-mail with my heartfelt apologies because of what occurred.
“There’s no place for that in the Ryder Cup or the game of golf. I heard Rory say it, we’re better than that in golf.
“That’s one thing our game has always portrayed when you compare us to other sports is that golf is a great game and people enjoy the game because of the values that golf has.
McIlroy hit back at some US fans at the Ryder Cup for their abuse towards him and his wifeGetty The Northern Irishman had to deal with some abhorrent treatment on the courseGetty“I can’t wait to reach out to Rory and Erica, and really the entire European team.
“Rory might have been a target because of how good he is, but the entire European team should not have been subjected to that.
“I feel badly and I plan on apologising to them.”
Extra security decision
CEO Spague also spoke further on the PGA’s decision to deploy extra police alongside McIlroy and Lowry on the second day.
The Irishmen were harassed and abused by fans on the side of the course, with Lowry even being held back from confronting one.
It led to the organisers having to take action, and on that, Spague said: “As the CEO, I let our team deal with that in the moment, let them do their job.
An extra police presence was brought in to help prevent things from boiling overGetty“I have an incredible amount of trust and confidence with our security consultant team.
“They were working very closely with our team and the New York State Police and all the other agencies.
“That’s an example of how we reacted.
“When we heard those things going on Saturday, we immediately redirected more of the security forces to those matches, whether it was Rory’s match or other matches or fan behaviour in certain parts of the golf course.
“On Sunday, we made sure to keep that amount of security in place, made sure it was what we felt, and our security consultants felt, was the right amount of people to make sure that, one, the players were safe and the fans would be dealt with swiftly if they got out of line.”
