Arsenal Can Take Control in Premier League Title Race With ‘Easiest’ Upcoming Fixtures ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

After navigating one of the toughest starts in the Premier League, Arsenal now face the easiest run of five fixtures according to the Opta Power Rankings. Now is the time for them to put the pressure on leaders Liverpool.

After a tricky opening schedule that included trips to Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle, plus a home clash with Manchester City, Arsenal’s fixture list is beginning to open up.

The Gunners sit two points behind leaders Liverpool, and Mikel Arteta will view the next month as a prime opportunity to close that gap, and perhaps even move into top spot.

That’s because, on paper at least, their upcoming games look far more straightforward than their opening run.

At the start of the season, we noted that Arsenal had the third-toughest opening set of fixtures of any Premier League side, behind only Manchester United and Bournemouth. Despite that, Arteta’s side have taken 13 points from their first six games, which is probably a return that many fans would have taken at the start of the season. Away wins at Old Trafford and St James’ Park were particularly impressive, even if the 1-0 defeat at Anfield still stings.

Looking ahead, the fixtures really do begin to tilt in their favour. According to the Opta Power Rankings, Arsenal have the easiest next five matches of any Premier League team.

As a reminder, the Power Rankings rate a frankly enormous number of teams (15,000+) across the globe based on a system that scores the current strongest side 100 and the weakest zero. Those scores are then used to rank the teams in order of strongest to weakest.

Arsenal’s combined average Opta Power Rating of their opponents in their next five games (88.6) is the lowest of any side in the league.

Arsenal’s run starts with a home game against 19th-placed West Ham. They then visit Fulham – a fixture in which they dropped points last season – followed by Crystal Palace at home, then back-to-back trips to newly promoted sides Burnley and Sunderland.

By contrast, Liverpool face the second-toughest run, with trips to Chelsea, Brentford and Manchester City in their next five Premier League matches. Coming into the weekend, Arne Slot’s side have lost consecutive games and, as we documented this week, have struggled recently on the road.

Man City face the fourth-toughest stretch, starting away to Brentford. The Bees held City to a 2-2 draw in this fixture last season.

With Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba fit again, and a run of difficult fixtures now behind them, Arsenal could be set for a highly productive month, and a stretch that could ratchet the pressure up on their title rivals.
