Team Pittsburgh Elite Aquatics’ Ben Whiteford has committed to Northwestern University as a part of the Wildcats’ men’s 2026 recruiting class.
I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to Northwestern University to further my academic and swimming journey. I would like to thank Coach Rachel, Coach Eddie, Coach Jacob, and the rest of the Northwestern coaching staff for this opportunity. I would also like to thank my family, friends, coaches, especially Coach Dave, for supporting me.

A backstroke and butterfly specialist, Whiteford competes at Upper Saint Clair High School in Pittsburgh. At the 2025 Pennsylvania 3A State Championship, Whiteford earned a pair of 5th place finishes in both the 100 backstroke (49.37) and 100 butterfly (49.43). His 100 fly marked a new best, while his 100 back was just off of his top times from the Speedo Winter Junior Championship – East in December of 49.07.
At the NCSA Summer Championships this past summer, Whiteford marked a plethora of new long course bests, including the 50 freestyle (23.34), 100 free (51.91), 50 back (26.27), 100 back (56.81), 200 back (2:09.59), 50 fly (24.92), and 100 fly (54.97).
One of Whiteford’s best short course outings came at the ISCA International Senior Cup in March, where he set notable personal bests in the 50 free (20.80), 100 free (45.01), 200 free (1:43.62), 200 back (1:49.11), and 200 fly (1:55.40).

Whiteford’s best times would have translated to a 27th-place finish in the 100 back, 39th in the 100 free, and 43rd in the 50 free.
The bulk of his skillset falls on the final two days of the conference championship format, so the question will be how he will manage that third event. Nevertheless, his progression favors the potential for him to reach scoring range in the Big Ten.
Whiteford joins Brandon Ha, Caleb Romero Serrano, Mike Marder, Jack Chiappetta, and Zach Kusch in the Wildcats’ 2027 recruiting class.
