How do Irish Presidential Elections work?
Ireland uses a strict process to ensure that the best candidates are presented to the public for nomination. To be eligible, candidates must secure nominations by either 20 members of the Oireachtas (parliament) or at least four local authorities. The deadline for this was set as September 24th.
The public then goes to the polls to cast their first votes. The election uses a single transferable vote system. This sees voters rank their candidates in order of preference. To secure the presidency, a candidate must secure 50% of the vote.
If this is not achieved through a round of voting, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and another count takes place. This continues happening until a candidate secures more than 50% of the vote.
In the 2011 election, Higgins secured the win on the fourth count. However, in the 2018 election, he secured it with the first count, hitting 56% of the vote.
