Liverpool suffered a second defeat in just four days as they slumped to a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in a loud RAMS Park in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

A first-half penalty from Victor Osimhen ultimately decided it, while Arne Slot’s men were unable to find the net despite having 16 shots in Istanbul, with just four testing goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir.

There was more bad news for the Premier League champions as both Alisson and Hugo Ekitiké came off with injuries on a night to forget for Slot.

After losing 2-1 to a late goal at Crystal Palace on Saturday, Liverpool were eager to bounce back here, but a strong showing from Okan Buruk’s side and another disjointed performance from the Reds led to more disappointment.

Slot produced a surprise before the game by naming Mohamed Salah on the bench, with Jeremie Frimpong playing on the right wing and Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back.

Ekitiké should have put Liverpool ahead in the eighth minute but made a mess of a free header after Cody Gakpo whipped a cross in from the left.

Just seconds after Gakpo had an effort cleared off the line at one end, the hosts were awarded a penalty at the other after Baris Alper Yilmaz was caught in the face by Szoboszlai’s trailing arm. Osimhen calmly placed his spot-kick down the middle to put Galatasaray ahead, becoming the first Nigerian player to score for as many as three different sides in the Champions League (Lille, Napoli and Galatasaray).

Liverpool pressed for an equaliser, with Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Ibrahima Konaté all coming close to scoring in the space of two minutes, while Osimhen almost added another but his attempted lob of Alisson didn’t have enough on it.

Ekitiké drew a save from Çakir early in the second half with a cheeky backheel attempt after Frimpong found the Frenchman with a low cross, while Osimhen should have done better after stealing the ball from Konaté and racing through on goal, but Alisson saved his shot easily.

There was bad news for the Brazilian goalkeeper though as he had to come off with an injury, replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Slot made more tactical subs just after the hour, with Salah, Isak and Conor Bradley coming on. Isak had a chance almost straight away after Wirtz played a nicely-weighted ball over the top but the Swede’s shot was tame.

There was another injury concern for the visitors when Ekitiké went down with what appeared to be a hamstring issue, replaced by Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty of their own with just two minutes of normal time remaining when Konaté was brought down, but a VAR check from referee Clément Turpin led to his initial decision being overturned when replays showed Wilfried Singo made contact with the ball first.

The final whistle blew to audible joy from the home fans, as Liverpool failed to score in a Champions League group stage/league phase game for the first time since a 2-0 defeat to Atalanta in November 2020, ending a run of 23 consecutive matches with at least one goal.

With a trip to Chelsea to come on Saturday, Slot will need to find more from his team, who have now lost five of their last eight away games in all competitions (W3), as many as their previous 34 beforehand (W21 D8 L5).
