The Chicago Cubs have made it official: Matthew Boyd will start Game One of the Wild Card Series tomorrow against the San Diego Padres.
Although it was a rough second half for Boyd, relative to his dominant first half, he was still the logical choice for the bulk part of Game One. He’s rested. He’s coming off a good outing. The Padres are much worse against lefties than righties. He’s been much better at Wrigley Field this year than on the road.
Even if the Cubs had opted to go with an opener, as we discussed earlier today, Boyd was still the guy to get the “starter”-like innings. And since a righty opener makes less sense against the Padres than most clubs, I’m good with this decision.
That’s especially true because the Cubs have righties Michael Soroka, Colin Rea, and Aaron Civale there for a match-up related switch, or if Craig Counsell wants to pull Boyd early for any other reason. With a solid single-inning reliever group rested and ready, you’re ultimately just aiming for Boyd and one of those righties to cover the first six or so innings. Do that, and you’re in really good shape.
Note, of course, that the Padres – with a truly loaded back of the bullpen – will be aiming for something similar with Nick Pivetta, so scoring early could be key.
The Cubs signed Boyd, 34, to a two-year, $29 million deal in the offseason as a priority starting pitcher target. He rewarded them with an All-Star season, and a 3.21 ERA over 179.2 innings. Now we just hope he saved his best in the second half for the playoffs.
