Greeley’s Real-Time Information Center helped with 7,000 calls in Year 1 ...Saudi Arabia

A year after the launch of the Real-Time Information Center, the Greeley Police Department hopes to build upon its success in the coming year with new technology and a growing staff despite budgetary constraints.

On Tuesday, Police Chief Adam Turk informed the city council the Real-Time Information Center has assisted with about 7,000 police and fire calls, with around 1,500 of those calls involving a deadly weapon. The center, currently housed in Fire Station 6, gives four full-time technicians access to a network of live cameras around Greeley that feed live video and information, which can then be relayed to officers on the ground.

Since the technology was launched in early October 2024, the Real-Time Information Center has been the first on the scene — meaning technicians could see the scene before officers arrived — for more than half of the received calls, according to Commander Tanya Gutierrez. The technology has assisted with 76 felony arrests and 85 misdemeanor arrests, in addition to helping resolve vehicle collision disputes.

Gutierrez shared a few notable incidents since the center’s launch, including the Sept. 3 arrest of a man accused of throwing a rock through a speed radar van that was occupied by a technician. Real-Time Information Center staff tracked the suspect through the cameras, allowing police to arrest him just four minutes later.

“This is awesome. This is some great stuff,” Councilman Johnny Olson said. “I think it really will improve our ability to improve safety around our community, not only for our officers, but also for quick responses.”

This week, police got a taste of how the center’s technology could be improved by utilizing drones as first responders. During this live test, a drone responded to a disturbance involving knives on Monday, arriving before officers and providing them with critical situational awareness. Police resolved the situation without injuries.

Andrew Warren from Skydio, a company specializing in drones for law enforcement, spoke to the council on Tuesday about the benefits of integrating drones into the center’s operations, noting an estimated $1.4 million in savings from the redistribution of labor. A similar program was launched in Lakewood, where drones were able to clear 41% of crime scenes without requiring the presence of an officer, Warren said.

“In their first 15 weeks, they flew their drones to around 758 calls for service. Out of those calls, they’re clearing 30% to 41% of those without the need to continue sending a ground unit,” Warren said. “This is a human officer that would have otherwise gone to this call. That drone gets there 90 seconds or less, and we can now clear that call. It’s led to 77 arrests for them, and they’re now getting essentially video data on one-third of all calls in the area that they’re targeting today.”

Turk said it’s unlikely the city will adopt this technology in the near future due to the hefty financial burden of roughly $2 million, with most of that going to the people who would pilot the drones. Funding will continue to prove a limiting factor across all aspects of the center, as the city’s limited budget has also delayed the construction of a building to house the center permanently.

Councilwoman Melissa McDonald said the city council could attempt to put a sales tax on the ballot in 2026, since they declined to do so this year and in 2024 due to low support in voter surveys.

Turk said the focus for the next year would be to expand the centers’ hours of operation, which are currently between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m., and to hire additional technicians.

“These things flat solve crimes,” Mayor John Gates said. “Whether it’s accidents or the serious felonies, they flat solve crimes and the numbers with just one year in the books bear that out.”
