ROCHESTER, N.Y. – By late September, the U.S. tropical storm season typically begins to wind down, and so far, 2025 has followed that encouraging trend. In fact, many would say it has been a relatively “easy” season and the data backs that up.
Maybe you remember the storms named Dexter and Erin? Not likely because we said very little about these storms. And even though these names were assigned, the storms had little to no impact on the mainland to the United States. As a result, they produced little fanfare during the News10NBC First Alert forecasts.
Currently, Hurricane Gabrielle is active in the central Atlantic. It is a well-developed category three hurricane, but the good news is that it poses no threat to the United States. In fact, Gabrielle is tracking eastward and is expected to weaken significantly before it reaches the coast of Spain in the coming week.
Looking ahead, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a couple of systems worth keeping an eye on. One is a developing low-pressure area near San Juan, Puerto Rico, and another is near the Windward Islands in the southeastern Caribbean. There is a high probability (over 80 percent) that both systems could become tropical storms over the next seven days.
Sea surface temperatures remain above 80 degrees in that area, which supports storm development, especially if favorable wind patterns persist. Should these systems strengthen, the next names on the list are Humberto and Imelda.
While the tropics remain active, the pattern so far has been cooperative for the U.S. This is a welcome sign during the heart of hurricane season. We will continue to monitor conditions and keep you updated with the latest developments on News10NBC First Alert weather.
